I need to do something and today I feel at my wits end. Hubby has done Doordash for over a year now. Tonight his account was deactivated unexpectedly due to a customer complaint which was blatantly a lie. We are waiting to see if its resolved but in the meantime he has no income. I have begged him to learn a trade or find something more stable but he won't. He has been bringing in really good money and tells me I should be happy with that and more supportive but to me its so unstable and so many things can go wrong. I am disabled and I am thinking about getting an accounting degree online through our local community college. I need something with work from home possibilities. For those of you with finance degrees was the cost of your education worth it? Are you employed in your field at a comfortable salary? I also looked at medical coding but everyone I talked to said it was incredible hard to get work from home positions. I really enjoy psychology but everything I read says you need a masters and no idea what I would do with it that would fit my needs. I am nervous about spending money on a degree that is not helpful to my situation and increasing my debt.

I find that most accounting jobs want a bachelors and most are not work from home

Most accounting positions will require you to be in an office, if not full time permanently, for at least x amount of time before being aloud to work from home. and without a bachelor's it's hard to find a decent paying position.

Have you looked into your states rehabilitation program? In AZ, they offer services for people who have disabilities to find employment that will work with your abilities. They can even pay for schooling, do job coaching, and pay for workplace accommodations, if you meet their eligibility requirements. It's a social welfare program so it's nationwide, however each state may have the ability to choose how they run the program (I'm not sure about this). I'm AZ, it's called Arizona Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA).

@giuliana262 They could not help me. One of my medical conditions is agoraphobia and they will not pay for online classes or training. I can't do on campus. I tried a semster and ended up owing the school 1500 for failing the classes.

Our community college offers an inexpensive certificate program for accounting. Ive started it, but my mom got sick & then passed away 2 yrs ago and I had to put it on hold! Now my husband and I are separating so life is still to complicated to go back to school. But I was doing it from home & will start back up again when I can manage it!

I have a B. S. in accounting and business admin. I am currently studying for my CPA. I love accounting but I am working in a office and honestly it's gonna be awhile till I can work from home. My long term career goal is to have a small in home private firm. Although I also tell people if you have a accounting degree I feel it's worth going to test for the CPA but you need a bachelor's with 150 approved credits or a master's degree, as it does really change your pay grade. Accounting for me was a great choice and since I did internships throughout my college career I had great jobs lined up before graduating. I did have classmates though who didn't intern, who didn't have a job lined up aftert college. I feel internships are great at giving you the momentum to push past other candidates. In all going into debt for my accounting degree was well worth it for me.

If you need something right now from home Verafast is hiring and gives most a chance quickly. Also, try Alorica, Pnc bank, Conduent, Assurance, Concentrix, Sitel, Sykes and your husband can do Grubhub, epmsonline, Ubereats. Good Luck. If you're looking to work from home insurance is a better route to go and the pay is good and it doesn't take long to get your license.

@prefect Thank you for the suggestions. Grubhub is not hiring here. Hes on a waiting list and he can't do Uber or Ubereats. He was banned from the platform last year for low ratings. We had an older car at the time that did not look nice and all the complaints centered around that. Though I found it rather suspicious he was banned after a no fault accident where Uber's insurance had to pay for our car. He was banned 2 weeks after their insurance paid 18k for a mini van we had owned only 2 weeks. He was hit head on by a guy on his cell phone. Police report clearly stated who was at fault.

Do you have amazon flex by you? My husband drives for them. They are guaranteed blocks and you know the amount in advance.
by (14.3k points)
@doxology yes. I will suggest it to him. Will depend on the weight if packages. He has arthritis and is not supposed to lift over about 25 pounds. We have a large Amazon complex about 20 minutes from here.

@vick my husband doesn’t do any large packages. Maybe he’s gotten lucky.

I just told him about it and hes checking out the website. Thank you

If he likes that check out UberEats. Or check for him to be a courier, fedex, ups, Amazon delivery if he likes the driving and being independent somewhat.

I'm an accountant and my degree was well worth it and there are many jobs in accounting. The only issue is that most accounting jobs are required to be in office. I have so many softwares etc and three monitors at work it would be impossible to work at home. Another option would be to try out bookkeeping. You don't need a degree to be a bookkeeper and you can work remotely as a bookkeeper more often. I would just highly recommend reading about bookkeeping, learning the most common softwares (QuickBooks, Xero, etc), and then getting some smaller simpler clients to start. You can make pretty good money bookkeeping with the convenience you may want

I have worked as a book keeper, with no accounting degree (though I have a bachelors degree). I started off doing the billing and paying the bills for a friend’s small business and got several other jobs by word of mouth. I’ve had to work in their homes or office unless they gave me a laptop to take home. It was good part time money and only required that I know Quicken or Quickbooks. I used to make $15-20/hour.

Are you fast at typing? I used to do transcriptions for a great company.
by (14.3k points)
@hobbledehoy no but I thought about downloading a program to learn and practice. I looked at KellyConnect and they do all chat customer service.

I currently work at home but I did put in a year at an actual physical office. That being said, you may want to look at insurance companies and see if any are hiring for data entry or similar positions. I sent you a message.

Call centers hire work from home positions (Aetna, Capital One, Apple etc). You may have to do some legwork to find one that will hire entry level, and you'll have to install a separate landline, but they pay well (like 30K a year) to take inbound calls.
by (14.3k points)
@carminecarmita Arise handles Apple and Atena. I am a little concerned about noise in my house (2 year old grandson lives with me) but going to check them out when the laptop I ordered from QVC arrives. Need to crave out space in the house that looks like a separate space for a video interview. I am also lookong at KellyConnent which I found this morning. Its all chat so noise should not be a factor.
by (11.6k points)
@vick you'll need to have noise low enough that they can't hear it on monitored calls. I'd say with a 2yo, that could be difficult. A chat role could be ideal and should offer 12-17/hr depending on the company (I'd push for at least 14/hr plus benefits; I spent 10 yrs in that world and you'll work plenty hard even though it's not otherwise physically demanding. I've hired inbound in center and WFH roles)

I have a finance degree and it’s definitely not a position that would offer WFH full time due to the amount of meetings I have weekly.

Learn bookkeeping. Accountants ALWAYS need bookkeepers to help with clients’ payroll and other things.

I would do medical coding and billing. You can definitely work from home and there's lots of job opportunities right now. School is cheaper than accounting too.

Can he do Uber eats? I work in the medical field and it’s hard to get in medical coding without the experience. But I would focus on bookkeeping also as clients are looking for someone to keep their records straight.

@soong no Uber banned his account after a no fault accident. Police report clearly stated the other driver admitted fault. They ended up having to pay 18k for our totaled car and his account was banned about a week after the payment was made claiming he had low ratings.

Have you looked into IT jobs? Tons of them are virtual and really well paid after a few years. I work in finance- work from home and make good money but I worked in an office for 8 years first. I support IT folks and there is tons of opportunities

@gallard57495 I will look at that. Thank you for the suggestion
