EDITED TO ADD: In the few days it has taken for admin to approve posting this (thank you for all your hard work! ), there have been SEVERAL posts in budgeting groups about homes being burglarized after women got their cash from the bank or used their cash at the grocery store. We are not cash spenders (never been in debt & have always paid our one Amex off in full on time) and use a virtual system BUT if you use cash, please always be aware of your surroundings, be mindful of who is around you in public if you talk about being an all cash spenders & having cash envelopes at home, etc. *** In as basic, nonspecific way as possible so as not to compromise anyone’s security, where do you keep your cash envelopes at home? (Sample response - closet, dresser, cabinet. ) Also - does anyone keep their cash in a fireproof type of lockbox? Between the weekly cash for expenses & the cash for sinking funds, this is some serious money sitting around.

@nitrate47 how did u do that? At a bank? Or other savings and loan?
by (9.6k points)
@zeena116 it's an online bank. You can open multiple savings accounts with Ally. com

@nitrate47 does each savings acct. have it’s own card? Can u add any time?
by (9.6k points)
@zeena116 I dont get debit cards for savings accounts. But I opened up a checking account with Ally that way I can transfer from the Sinking fund/savings to checking when I need to use it.

Separate checking account and use a google sheet to track where the $$ is allocated. One card for that account.

I keep a limited amount of cash at home in a fireproof safe. Sinking funds and EF are in the bank.

My dad always kept his “cold cash” in his freezer. I use a fireproof lockbox (with important papers and cash) small enough to grab and take with me if necessary.

There was a discussion I think that talked about keeping cash. It was determined after many comments that if you do keep a lot of $ at home, the safest place would be in a fireproof safe hidden in a freezer, in case there's a fire while nobody is home. Freezers and fireproof safes seem to survive fires the best.

I’m home 24/7 and I have incredibly loud and mean sounding dogs - I’m probably the least likely person to get burgled on my street. ‍♀️. Even still my money is hidden and unless you live here there is no way someone would be able to find it. We have a fireproof safe but we just keep documents and important family mementos in it - would be too easy for someone just to pick it up and take it with them.

I think it is probably wise not to post if you keep extra cash in your home. I know this is a closed group but that does not mean someone could read your comments that is not to be trusted and use you as their next target.

My husband has a hiding spot that no one will ever even think to look. We have it in a fire safe bag. For the most part someone is always home. I work from home. I have my important documents in a folder that I can grab if need be. We also have an alarm system, and outdoor surveillance and I am license to carry.

Check your home insurance policy for the limit of coverage for cash lost/destroyed. My policy is up to $500. We keep all of our savings in a BECU savings account.

We’ve been talking about getting a new medium sized safe that is bolted to the floor (similar in size to what you see in hotel rooms) and it will go in a space no one has access to except us
by (3.8k points)
Also, we just started budgeting in January, but I think we are going to keep a limit on what can be in the house. Once it reaches that limit, for example, $500. it will get deposited into a bank account. For that I’m going to be creating 2 bank accounts at a bank separate from our current bank so the funds are not accessible via my other accounts.

All my sinking funds and savings are in high interest savings accounts with tangerine. I only do 4 envelopes so it’s just in my wallet.

We have our EF in a fireproof safe and the weekly envelopes in a drawer (not over $300)

This is one big reason we aren’t cash users. We have a separate account for “envelopes” and bills.

I go to a bank near my job (which is about an hour from my home) so thankfully no one would be able to follow me (and since I live in the city, there are several branches to choose from). I keep it in a fireproof lock box. And then keep the key in two places, that are not easy to find.

Sinking funds are in sub savings at our credit union. Just keep grocery, eating out, gas, and fun money at home, and since I only take out what I need between each paycheck, it's not that much.

I’m a debit card user. Rarely have cash. I’ve always wondered when someone post on FB their cash got taken, if it is someone they know and is watching their FB posts.

I have some on hand hidden, but all my EF and savings funds are in the bank and not linked to a card. We do have a change jar, but if someone needs it that bad, well, that's between them and God. My firebox has documents in it that are important, annoying to replace, and generally of value to me only.
