To my fellow nurses, what do you do for a side hustle? Do you do something health care related to capitalize on what you can make an hour or something less stressful?

My husband and I pickup online mattress returns and help sell them on behalf of the company we work for. It too expensive for the mattress companies to pick them up themselves and they usually end up in the dump so they contract it out. We end up making $100-$900 a mattress depending on the size and model. We spend 6-8 hours a week doing it and have made over $2, 000 consistently since we started 2 years ago. My husband does the pickups on his way home from work and I do all of the selling and scheduling.

Substitute School Nurse, easy job with a good amount of pay. I make 125 a day subbing and the hardest thing I have to do is glucose checks and tube feedings. I come from long term care so I’m use to both.

@haruspex I've known a few nurses who do this and actually really like it.

I’m a RN and work from home doing utilization management. I would LOVE to do extra but i have 2 young kids. I’ve debated finding another WFH job to supplement the one i have now. I have been away from the bedside for 6 years so that’s a no. Lol
by (1.4k points)
@cheapjack24 it’s two parts: monitor inpatient admissions into acute inpatient, skilled nursing, rehab, or long term acute care facilities (making sure they meet criteria for the inpatient stay at the of level of care per their insurance policies/health plans. Or claims. I’ve done both but currently do claim review.

I started working in the office to get experience and then for a WFH job

@karaite if ur willing to share can u inbox me what company you work for?
by (1.4k points)
@lesotho28727 i cant share mine but you can look into the bigger insurance companies 1. Anthem 2. Cigna 3. United Healthcare 4. Humana 5. Aetna I’m sure there are more like Kaiser but I’m not familiar with them but worth looking into! Look for keywords “Medical management “ “Utilization review nurse” etc.
by (2.1k points)
@karaite I’ve always had a hard time filtering out what’s spam and what’s not but thanks
by (1.4k points)
@lesotho28727 always go directly to their websites in the careers section. Should you get an email double check their web address in the email but it usually always come from the Talent Acquisition team or something similar like that. HR usually does the initial outreach concerning job opportunities Feel free to inbox me with any other questions.

I am full time Labor and Delivery but will pick up extra 4, 6, 8, or 12 hour shifts in ER and Nuc Med doing cardiac stress tests. It is nice because when they call/text for extra help I get to set my hours. Today a dept needed extra help and I told them I would be happy to but I was leaving no later than 1330 to pick my kids up from school. I made extra cash instead of piddling around my house and didn't miss any family time!

@transpadane69105 that is what we call them also. I just wasn't sure if other referred to them as that

I do per diem in psych nursing/addictions. I can choose when I want to work, it’s easy for me compared to acute care, and they pay very well. I get roughly $330 for an 8 hour shift.

I do billing from home for a doctors office. Doesn’t make that much but not stressful at all. I’m looking into jobs as a legal nurse consultant. Makes more $$$ but requires more of my time.

I work Fulltime for the Department of Health and joined the military at age 33 as a nurse and have been in for 7 years. I go to school and am getting my MSN and Ed. D for free. My son will use my school benefits when he goes to college. The Pay is great, health benefits great, lots of travel discounts too.

I do home pedi home health nursing as a PRN because I make almost 12 dollars more an hour picking up a late notice shift (within 24 hours) than OT at my normal job, and then it gives me some differentiation to keep me from burn out! The company always has weekends open for me to pick up last minute.
by (1.8k points)
Also, waaaaay less stress!

I'm an Oncology Nurse and I sell Scentsy for my side hustle. I have a lot of fun doing it and it's different. I've been a nurse for almost 16 years ( how is that even possible? ) and needed something that wasn't so emotionally and mentally draining.

Plasma. I needed a treatment derived from plasma during both of my pregnancies so it’s a sweet way to pay it forward but also I get to relax for an hour. I watch you tube, listen to podcasts, order my grocery pickup, ect during that time.

@coppola6771 how would I go about doing this? My best friend lost her battle to cancer and I would go with her to get platelet transfusions. They kept her alive for an extra 8 years. I would love to donate, I was told I can't donate blood because I'm anemic. would that still be a problem for platelets and plasma?
by (1.4k points)
@marks I would talk to your primary doc about what you can take to get your levels up. A friend of mine goes and she’s anemic . but she manages it well with liquid iron and gummy iron and by eating iron rich foods. Your dr. Could test your levels and then give you specific recommendations.
by (1.4k points)
They do check your iron level every time you donate, but with plasma they only take the plasma and not the red blood cells which make it easier on your body if you’re anemic.
by (2.9k points)
@coppola6771 I’ve been considering doing this!
by (380 points)
@coppola6771 , I know of course all places pay differently, but how much do you get for each donation?
by (1.4k points)
@sevenfold349 I get 20$ for the first, 50$ for the second, and they always have bonuses like “get an extra 50$ on your 7th donation” and such. I go to a BioLife center.
by (1.4k points)
I average around 330 a month. After my long days of working in mental health/addiction as a nurse. I just want to sit and zone out. It’s been awesome.
