Question about budgeting for bulk purchases. When I was shopping on Saturday, I bought 3 jugs of laundry detergent because it was on sale for nearly half-off. I didn't need it but the price was so good, I couldn't resist. However, I blew my grocery budget for the week. (I lump detergent in with groceries). Should I put such items in my misc envelope or increase my budget to cover bulk purchases when they go on sale? ‍♀️

I struggle with this, too. I think I’m going to add a sinking fund for bulk purchases.

I lump my groceries and household, too, and it's the only envelope I rollover every paycheck if theres anything left in it for this specific purpose, to stock up when there is a good deal.

I combine food and household stuff together so I would just increase the amount and continue to rollover any that’s left to next budget each paycheck

This is a HH purchase for me. I allow my HH to roll over because I like to buy those things in bulk. I'm just trying to figure out of this dollar store cupon shopping is going to work for my toiletries. I don't need nor have place to stockpile things though.

I have a separate "household" budget for toiletries, cleaning stuff. Diapers/wipes

I keep it separate for this reason — but I label everything and see how long they last and have a running list of what they cost me and adjust my budgets

I have an envelope that is strictly for sales like this. I don’t keep a lot but it helps keep me on track with grocery budget

I was doing this for a while and realized I was spending way more money on the “good deals” and had a bunch of crap sitting in my house. I don’t let myself go over budget for that stuff anymore and honestly find myself saving more money when only buying things when I need them.

Start a “good deals” envelope!

I have made a a sinking fund for those type of things. So that when and item goes on sale I use the money from there  Last time I used it for toilet paper, it was a huge deal in my store!

I know Pennies into Pearls puts $40 in her budget each month specifically for any “stock up” deals.
