I received a statement from the IRS wanting $2049 (which includes $100 interest) by April 1st from last years taxes. This is due from debt settlement however I never received 1099Cs to know the company information to claim, the amount or anything else. Since I didnt receive them, I didnt claim them. Now the IRS is sending me the notification of payment due because of this. I can have the $2049 by months end regardless, that's not an issue. My issue is do I dispute it due to not receiving it, have the aairs force the company to send me the 1099C within 10 days and amend last years taxes potentially owing less than the $2049 but then if it comes back as being owed correctly, I'm looking at additional interest from the IRS due to the dispute needing to go beyond April 1 due date? Or do I just pay it and be done without the fight? While I will dispute anything I can to save money, I'm questioning if it's worth when it comes to the IRS. My job requires federal clearances and I can't jeopardize that. And a separate question from this. has anyone gotten a 1099c and then a 1099c amended from the same company (Discover to be specific)? Do I still need to claim the income since the amended form forfeits their write off? No tax preparer I've asked has been able to help with that
