Where does a new mattress rate on needs or emergencies? I've been staying at my parents far too long and using a mattress that was passed down from who knows where. very uncomfortable and when my water pillow leaked. potentially made my mattress moldy. I've just hit $1k in my emergency savings. Has anyone bought this one before?

A mattress is essential to back health and sleep therefore mental health. Leave yourself a cushion and consider an interim solution
by (860 points)
@himation never thought of it that way. sleep has been a huge issues for years. And my mental health has suffered greatly.
by (6.7k points)
@sennet my mental health is always linked to sleep. Do the best you can for yourself: but even if you have to get a shorter term one to leave yourself a bit of emergency fund: do that.

I have not but maybe one day if I need to get another. But I got the Shiloh one (10 or 12 inch) off of Amazon! Full size is under $400? And I think the King we got was around $460? Delivered to your door free with Prime shipping if you have it. It’s amazing! It’s firm which is great for our bodies. No need box spring.

A good mattress is essential. Or you will be adding more to you medical sinking fund later.
by (860 points)
@shamblin luckily I'm in Canada and don't pay medical bills. But i certainly don't want to be paying out in any means in the future, be it pain or injury.
by (8.8k points)
@sennet yes. Well you definitely don’t want to be in pain. Damn Canada lol. Wish us and canada were on the same page when it came to medical expenses.

I just ordered that exact same mattress for my son in full size. He loves it and I’m impressed with it.

I've never bought a mattress period, let alone amazon. And from what I've looked at this was the cheapest. And people here seem to love it. Ill go with it. but ill look into when.
by (3k points)
@sennet i was hesitant to buy one online. But in one of my groups so many people recommended this one. So glad I decided to do it! If you’re nervous about ordering it from amazon (in case you don’t like it) just go to zinus website and order directly from there. I think it’s a 100 night trial you get.

A mattress isn't an emergency. Start a sinking fund for it . Or buy a 2in foam mattress topper. It can feel like a whole new bed . Try and work it into your budget
by (3k points)
@dextroamphetamine45 it is if it has mold on it.
by (19.1k points)
@hob3849 yes, but then she will use all of her ER savings on a mattress and have to build it back up again. I'd ask friends and family for a mattress and make a sinking fund for a new one
by (3k points)
@dextroamphetamine45 yea I would buy a mattress those mattresses would only take half of her EF. They are nice and will save her some aches and pains as well as some respiratory issues. To each their own but I would buy it.
by (19.1k points)
@hob3849 I didn't realize the mattress is only 300! Last time I bought a mattress was like 10 years ago. We paid like 1k for ours. Didn't know you could get them a lot cheaper now ! Yeah then I'd probably just buy it !
by (3k points)
@dextroamphetamine45 Lol. Right! I’m buying one for my guest room. I’m with you if it would have taken every penny.
by (8.2k points)
@dextroamphetamine45 that’s the whole point of an emergency fund it’s meant to be used to save you from charging. Then you fill it back up.
by (19.1k points)
@tybi yes but buying a mattress at least for me isn't an emergency unless it was burned in a fire. In my mind my ER fund is for if I need to fix the roof, my boiler breaks , my furnace broke, a tree fell on my house, husband lost his job . That's what it is for me . I feel sinking funds are meant to keep people from charging . But what's great about her system is everyone categorize things different and does what works for them !
by (8.2k points)
@dextroamphetamine45 that’s okay. We can all do it differently but not having a good safe healthy place to sleep is important. Emergency fund isn’t savings. It’s meant to help you manage Murphy and refill as needed. However people do it all different ways and that is okay too.

If it’s putting your sleep and body in jeopardy (waking up sore, not getting a good nights rest) yes, I believe it’s considered emergency. During my first pregnancy I couldn’t take it anymore and bought a mattress from Overstock. Now that I’m pregnant with my second, I told my husband last night it’s literally the best sleep I’ve gotten in years. It’s a mood changer and I feel much better throughout the day.

@glimmer520 what did you buy? I'm shopping mattresses now and would like some recommendations :)

I just bought one off amazon and I love it! The brand was Ashley. Same concept. It’s a 12 inch memory foam, was $250 well worth it in my opinion.

I think a good mattress is an necessity — a shitty mattress can lead to back problems and loss of sleep which can ultimately lead to low quality of life. I have a mattress like this off amazon and I love it, it was super cheap and it’s been amazing

We have this exact one in king size and I love it  get a mattress protector if you have a water pillow, but you won’t regret getting this mattress. My husband did about 6 months of research on bed in a box mattresses. It was between this and a purple. My eyes bugged out of my head at the price of a purple  so I told him we are going with the cheaper option and if it doesn’t work we will shell out the $$$ for a purple. Going on two years now and we still love this mattress. Start a sinking fund for it, and check the prices for it every day. I bought this in a twin for our son eArlier this year and the price fluctuated between $79-$115 overnight. So if you catch it on a cheap day I would buy it.

I have a 12" zinus cali king and it is freaking AMAZING. Its so reasonably priced too. I was scared to buy online so the fact it was cheap ish made me less worried. I was 7/8months pregnant when I bought mine and finally got a whole month of sleep before baby came!

I say priority- sleep is important. We didn’t order that one but we’ve had this one from amazon and have switched all our beds to them. They are fantastic.
by (20.7k points)
But Keep an eye on price I’m pretty sure we spent under $300

We had a super super old mattress that we knew we were gonna need to replace eventually. When we were moving my boyfriend decided not to put a tarp over it like I told him to. It ended up down pouring all over the mattress. It was SOAKED and ruined. We had to buy a new one cause we had no choice. That being said don’t spend it out of your $1k emergency money. Wait and save up for it. $300 will be quick to save up for

We got a similar one from Mattress America on Amazon. It’s fabulous! We had a very expensive Tempurpedic before. This is very close and we got a king for under $400! I recommend the 12 inch. Worth the investment!

You spend (ideally) eight hours A DAY in you bed. Getting good and restful sleep is a tenement to overall health. It’s important
