I think next year(all of 2021) we will have to continue to rent to save up a bit before buying. We have two high energy dogs, my husband and I, and we might have a baby during the fall 2021. Our current complex would be about 1120 base rent a month for the cheapest apt, with a small yard on the first floor, washer and dryer. We are considering toughing it out for a year in a studio apt, for around 900-1000 a month (we are looking for the cheapest) that still has in unit washer/dryer but wouldn't have a yard. Right now we have a roommate and pay about 930/month. Worth it?

Are you able to stay where you are right now, if so I would for sure stay. If you have to leave me and my husband lived in a Studio apt for just over a year right after we got married. It was doable and we saved a lot and bought our first house right after. We did not however have two large dogs. Do you have time to go out and walk them a lot? also would any of the studio suites allow dogs?

@frieder the studio would allow the dogs, we don't walk them a ton but we would get one of those potty patio things. We can't stay where we are because it's a two bedroom and we can't afford it (1500 a month) so we would have to do either the one bedroom for 1120ish in this same complex

Got it. Then I would try and go down to the studio if you think you can manage it with the dogs.

If you are planning on having a baby you might not have a room mate after. Just being honest, that is rough.

@regine yeah, we have a roommate til the end of the year, then are getting our own place next year. Either a one bedroom apt with a yard in our current complex for 1150 base rent or somewhere else without a yard for maybe 900

@assiniboine63 gotcha I must have read that wrong.

Babies have so many costs. I would try and make the studio work but that will be rough if they need out and baby is napping.

@regine we would get one of the patio potties! Hopefully it would work as well as I'm hoping

How old are the dogs? If they are older that might be hard to teach them. If at all possible I would move into the studio and save as much as you can.

@regine 3&1 I think they'd figure it out! They're smart. Stubborn but smart haha

That would work out to $50 more a week for a yard. That’s about $7 a day. I think it’s worth it so that your dogs have a yard. It’s so so so important for large dogs to have room to move especially if you aren’t walking them daily.

@twannatwattle88265 I feel that! 2400 in a year though  but yeah that's our hard spot! We of course are going to get better numbers when we are closer to the date since they fluctuate. I guess just trying to figure at what $ is it worth it, 200, 300, 400 a month?

High energy dogs in a studio seems like a bad mix; for them, for you and for your neighbors. Add in a baby and your studio is going to be far too cramped. Keep looking, maybe consider a roommate for all of 2021 in a place a little cheaper for all of you? Side/second jobs to save $$ too.
