What do you say to someone who says getting manicures are a "need" because she's in HR at a big company and needs to look good? She spends a lot of money on either getting them done or buying the polish and supplies to do them herself. She also bought these stick on sets ($15 each) because she "needs" them for when the the nail polish starts to peel and she doesn't have time to get to the salon and just wiping it off "looks bad" so the stick on kind helps to make it look nicer quickly. I don't argue that she needs to look presentable at her job because that's a given for her position. But I do disagree that having your nails painted all the time is a necessity. I don't get my nails done, but I file them myself and they look neat and clean. I still look presentable w/o spending so much on my nails. This is someone who's house is underwater and has two kids and is caring for an aging parent. (we're sisters) so we both feel the burden of financial responsibilities w/our family. She has come to me to help her organize her finances, but whenever I bring things up for her to curb her spending like she buys too much clothes or spends too much on her nails/hair etc. she gets defensive immediately and always says she only does it for her 'job'. I don't argue that she truly believes this, But what can I do/say to help her see these are not "needs" that they are really "wants".
