by (540 points)
@own1113  I use to stress about, but now I’m looking at it in smaller chunks with consumer debt being my main focus. I look at student loans and mortgage as “good” debt in the sense that I get tax benefits, a higher paying job because of my degree, and a roof over my head for me and my daughter. That’s how I stopped getting anxiety over the numbers
by (1.7k points)
@microprint good idea! Once I pay off my credit card debt, I’m going to tackle student loans then mortgage.

$681, 914. 00 - Home, Condo (that we kept as a rental and now can’t sell due to the market), truck, SUV, Credit line, Credit card, personal loan. Holy ! When you add it all up it seems insurmountable. We do have a “decent shovel” though. So we trudge on and keep at it. What other choice is there? Giving up is not an option!
by (1.7k points)
@stere you are absolutely right. The market is bad right now?
by (2k points)
@own1113 it is here. I’m in Calgary Alberta  which is caught in a huge recession. Our economy is tied up mostly in Oil & Gas but when the XL pipeline didn’t get approved and several other pipelines were blocked that left us with no way to get our oil to market. So where my Condo used to be valued at ~$260K I would now be lucky to get $170/$180k and I owe $210k. I’m trying to decide right now if there’s a way for me to come up with the extra $30-40k in order to sell it or hold on to it for a few years and hope the economy rebounds. Economic forecasts say recovery is 5-7 years out.
by (1.7k points)
@stere I’m so sorry to hear that.

I don’t want to come across as bragging but officially $0. In the last year we paid off all debt, cars and bought our house in cash. I personally 5 years ago had about $80, 000 in just credit cards alone. Through budgeting and an amazing work opportunity for my husband, we were able to do pay everything off.
by (810 points)
@archaic yeah get yo brag on! Proud of you!
by (560 points)
Thank you ladies! I never thought I’d see the day. That $80, 000 was consumer debt and didn’t include my car or a mortgage. It’s an amazing feeling.

@archaic This is awesome. Do you have some advice for us that are trying to make it there?
by (560 points)
@own1113 honestly hard work and a really good financial advisor. For 5 years my husband worked 14 hour days building his company and just over a year ago was able to sell it which left us in a really good financial position. But he sacrificed a lot to get were he is.

@paperweight69 Share it with the world. There is someone that is going through the same thing and you never know what example or motivation you can give someone else. I have my whole team at work saving money and saving for their ER fund. They have their coloring charts up at the cubs. We all need to be a blessing to someone else and build others as we are building ourselves. That’s what the world should be about. ❤️❤️
