Nothing. I got laughed at for mentioning Rosemont gave out face masks. If they aren't giving a $1 face mask they're not giving any sort of credit.

@navaho ok

Please tell me where you see Rosemont in there. Because they aren't

This was 2017. Get your facts straight the money goes to low income communities

@navaho and I dont appreciate your dumb comment about a face mask. You dont know me. You dont know if I have health issues. You dont know what my kids have. So that was a low blow and needn't not be said. In times of crisis, people can stand up and be helpful and be good people. Or people can try to hurt others.

@cristoforo it's not a low blow you dont need a mask in your car or with your family members in your house.

Elk Grove charges $9 for 100 cu feet of water/sewer, Des Plaines charges $6. 80. And a significant part of the city gets their water from Illinois American Water. You're probably saving over $200 a year by being on Des Plaines water instead of EG.

Cathy, if you are struggling in light of the crisis and would have a hard time with your water bill (or any other City bill you may owe), I suggest reaching out to your Alderman or the City - accommodations can definitely be made.
by (2.5k points)
To be clear - this goes for anybody struggling. Your elected officials & the City are definitely willing to try and assist.

@erelia23982 I’m sorry, but I’ve reached out about recent problems, and when things got too complicated to deal with, they just chose to ignore me .

I know a guy who had concerns about a high risk individual who wished to keep his family safe while continuing to work his essential job by living in a camper parked illegally outside his house. The city notified their inspectors and he's able to do what he needs to and they aren't going to cite him. The City of Des Plaines isn't some faceless bureaucracy like Washington. You can literally call the city and ask for advice on your issue, or for help. This kind of stuff is so unproductive.
by (14.8k points)
@interjection and you can walk into city hall with everything they told you to bring only to have to return because of something they didn’t say. Regularly. It is less faceless than the state or the feds, but it still operates on bureaucrats who rely on your being unable to say who it was who misdirected you. Let alone waiting around for an inspector for something try suddenly a permit for.

Yes but you have people, ie your Aldermen, who are willing to advocate for you. People you, presumably, voted to put in office to do that very thing. There isn't just once avenue of approach. You don't only have to walk into city hall and deal with a desk clerk. All of the phone numbers for the different departments who might be able to advise you are available publicly. Government is complicated at all levels. If it could be as easy as making a phone call and getting what you want, it would already be that way. But that's not how the world works. Remember also that with the current crisis, the people staffing those offices are probably on skeleton crews and have more calls now than they normallyhave. Literally every single person here has to bear the burden of what is happening. It sucks. But it will get better. Until then we have to be more patient than usual, and more willing to do a little beyond what would normally be expected of us. History gave us this moment whether we asked for it or not.

@woodsy I know of someone else effected by their inconsistencies. You are not an isolated case.

Justin, I don't think it's unproductive. Citizens are voicing frustration and elected leaders should be a little more receptive. We only seem to hear from them during election time, when they want to plant signs all over the neighborhood. Frustration is often a seed for change. =^)

I'm for voicing frustration. I am also for people to understand better how their city works (ie that water is cheaper here than in EGV anyway), and to understand that the crisis as it stands affects the city as well. Not just the community. The US hasn't faced a crisis of this magnitude since 1941. We've grown complacent and few people have since had the floor pulled out from under them like this. It is going to take time to adapt.

@lustihood I currently live in both towns. I GAVE my $200 credit to the soon to be new owners and turned around to buy another property in Des Plaines. Believe me when I say this, you’re going to have your ups and downs in every town. but Des Plaines is better. Grass isn’t always greener, don’t judge a book by its cover.
by (530 points)
@interjection People also fail to understand that $200 today, means higher taxes tomorrow. These Cities just cannot print money like the feds do to recoup the losses. That's all got to come from somewhere, and somewhere is property owners, businesses, and sales taxes.
by (4.4k points)
I'm not judging, or comparing the two cities Nicole. Individuals were voicing frustration and @interjection indicated that frustration was unproductive. I disagree with that assessment.

@shannon this is exactly the problem. the taxes next couple of years are going to rise significantly especially since DP stopped getting revenue from vehicle stickers, not to mention the shut down of the casino, and hotels not collecting taxes. Relief for people is great, but only if that relief doesn't cause a deficit and not every person needs it. I'm certainly not going to get a credit on my mortgage

Des Plaines is doing NOTHING. They’re just letting landlords make verbal threats of physical harm, and taking their side once they deny it. Only to advice them as to how to get rid of their tenants. I reached out to the police and the alderman after I got a poor response from the police, and still. nothing. I’m so disappointed with DP right now.
