Shopify's monthly fee is a straight steal for the 24/7 customer support, built in CDN, built in analytics, built in SSL, built in product and inventory management, built in themes, built in app store, built in host, built in file manager, etc. if you're gonna make something cheaper than $29/mth which I'm sure many would want, how much value are you sacrificing from the merchant? I wish more people would take the $29/mth fee as some form of friendly pressure to hustle harder instead of just complaining about it. If you can't make a sale or two over the course of 30 days to cover Shopify's expense, what are you even doing? (this isn't a shot at you, just sayin in general that I see this a lot usually by people who have no marketing skills and/or a poor storefront setup but then complain like it's Shopify's fault)

For the amount you pay and the value you get, Shopify is a steal

Define "Cheap". WooCommerce is "free" but you do have alot of add ons that may or may not make it the same price. Really the price of the platform shouldn't be the question but what you're really trying to do. If price is the only consideration, you could probably go to Wix or BigCommerce and they most likely have super cheap options.

"Cheaper" is a poor selling point. Stick with simpler.

Is cheaper the only benefit?

Simpler is a better word as @sandlin said. One central beautiful theme similar to an Etsy store, easy to add products, no fumbling with themes and plugins.

What are you building. I’d be willing to try it

@stanford a way to throw up products for sale and have product pages similar to a simple Etsy store on your own website without really having to create a full on e-commerce website with hundreds of pages and fumbling with themes
by (390 points)
@immigrate37 I could appreciate something like that. Let us see it when it’s done. Will it be a standalone solution or will it run on something like Wordpress or any other cms?
by (570 points)
@stanford its own
by (330 points)
@immigrate37 when you describe it like this. it is just Amazon or Ebay
by (570 points)
@blodgett6 but it's on your own website

Anyone who wants cheaper simply means they don’t make enough profit to pay for Shopify

Why not more efficient, but cheaper?
by (2.2k points)
@blodgett6 he doesn’t understand people’s pain points. He presumed everyone wants cheap. He hasn’t realised that when running a business cheap isn’t always the best idea
by (330 points)
@trevino exactly! I don't know why the hell people always think that cheap is good. It has proven that quality is always what wins
by (570 points)
@trevino that's your pain point. A lot of other people's pain points is price too. Not everyone shares your pain point
by (330 points)
@immigrate37 That is correct and wrong in the same time! It is correct, as there are people who search for a lower price, but that doesn't mean they are a good target person! Why are you offering a lower price and how much lower is it? Is it 70-80% lower or is it slightly lower? Also, what else do you offer and where is your credibility?
by (2.2k points)
@immigrate37 you missed the point totally obviously. If people are running a business and only care about cheap then they are either not making enough money or they have a poor persons mentality ( always focusing on saving money instead of looking for ways to generate money ).

@immigrate37 and if you read my comment again at what point did I state anything that relates to my pain point ? Maybe stop making shit up and read what was put
by (570 points)
@trevino take it easy you said he doesn't understand people's pain points. Cost is a pain point

WordPress is free if you know how to add Woocommerce for trial products. After sales are made then move to a better more robust platform
by (950 points)
This right here, and if you know how to code you can make woocommerce efficient enough until you write your own, or move to another platform.

@bucket17 yes sir! You really have to have an education in this or pay someone.
by (950 points)
100% but between the two everything is easily achievable to be successful, and that's just one of the reasons I love this industry.

You get what you pay for and as someone who has migrated from Pinnacle cart, to Jigoshop, to WooCommerce, to Shopify, my #1 recommendation is just go with what's proven to work best within your businesses capabilities. By that, I don't mean get Magento 2 over Shopify+ unless you have $50k+ to spend on development.
