Depends on who it is and what they are sharing.

Is it proportional to what you receive which I mean what I gain or get out of it OR Proportional to what they leverage experience or knowledge.

@asp5380 Between $200 & $500

It really depends on the topic I'm consulting on and how in depth the conversation. I generally charge between $97-250/hour. But, I have peers/friends in the industry who charge $500-1000+ an hour. Think about it like this, how much is the problem they are helping you solve worth? Are they helping you solve a couple hundred dollar problem, or is it a problem that could save you or help you bring in thousands of dollars?

Charge them whatever amount, but whatever you charge them gets applied to their first payment.

It depends. Just like with medical bills. The prices range drastically. I personally charge $60 for a one hour Soap Opera Sequence consult.

My official rate is $150/hr but the last three I ended up enjoying so much I didn’t even charge. I’ve paid $150 myself for seven minutes with a guy before. I didn’t need the whole hour to get what I needed. If someone charges you $1k for the hour and you think it saved you time and at least the 1k than I’d say it’s worth it. How much value is the information going to bring you? If it’s not much than don’t pay that much. If it’s vital don’t be cheap. I spent a decent amount of money hiring people to ask questions about various parts of business, woke up early in the morning for some of them that were in Europe. Was the smartest technique in learning that I ever did I jumped past people that had been doing it for years, I just didn’t have the patience I wanted to learn as quickly as I could. This is a rant here but Always hire the best expert in anything you need to learn that your wallet can afford.

Consulting for what ? A medical condition ? Litigation ? Or a mechanical car problem? What I’m saying each consult is different and so is the charge

As long as you still earn more than what you paid for it, then its ok.

For Social media ad consulting it’s $150 an hour with a 1 hour minimum. 15 minute incriminates after the first hour.

I have no idea. I ONLY hire contingent based advisors. I guess it all depends on the skills and knowledge they bring. I mean there’s some consultants I know u would pay 6 figures for, but they have the knowledge and are established etc someone I have never heard of before, I don’t know. $2000 is reasonable if I had to throw out a number

100-150$ at most and be specific with what you want to get out the session. Most people will charge what they think the prospect is willing to pay rather than the objective value of the service/advice. Good luck

It really depends on the level of expertise, subject matter, what's in the SoW, and the target client. I've seen (and charged) anywhere between $100/ hr (when I first started) - $10k for a 6 hour meeting.

Instead of comparing your fee to what others have paid, consider the value you're getting from the consult. If it's worth what you're paying then you're getting your money's worth. Nothing else should matter.

For a 1 hour consult we've charged nothing, and we've charged over $1k. It really depends. I think @stefa9 hit the nail on the head.

Free, if I believed the consultee was a potential customer or partner. I wouldn't do it otherwise.

If you have to compare prices and shop around for consulting then you are not serious and most likely will not pull the trigger.

A consult is only worth paying for if they’re giving you a punch list of things to drive improvement in performance following the consult. If that’s not the deliverable something is off.

Depends on the subject and who the audience is. -- Y-Combinator start-up kids at my local coffeeshop -- Free -- Funded , C or D series startup, it will always be above industry rate if I have no skin in the game. --Fortune 500 CTO/CMO - it depends on subject - casual subjects are free, discovery is always charged. Anything related to work is billable. --Others - I charge industry rates. There is always a long term objective. Free can lead to a SoW. I have a CMO who calls me on the weekends for IT help like how to open up Excel. Totally unrelated to what I do but they pay me a HEFTY retainer. Those clients can call me up any time they want. This is how you get preferential treament with RFPs.
