@atlante honestly though water and a decent spade it’s easy. I live in a heavy clay area and if I can dig down my whole garden to lay artificial being disabled as well as 30 weeks pregnant at the time I’m sure you more than capable

Dump soil in a circle and build up a small circle banking then line it.
by (360 points)
@bluebonnet build a wall?. build a wall?. are you serious!? right now I'm at the stage of figuring out what's the difference between a spade and shovel! . Ive learned that you can't dig with a shovel although it has the look of a spade!
by (460 points)
@atlante there are small kit ponds that are not to hard to build but like I say depends on how big you want to go and what look you want.
by (360 points)
@bluebonnet oooh I like that. .
by (460 points)
@atlante you could also just buy a small hard plastic pond, dig a small hole for the bottom half then use that soil to bank up around top half.
by (360 points)
@bluebonnet I think you might just be my pond guru!

by (360 points)
@tullis8206 yeah it was the thought of diggin a hole to escape prison came to mind to be fair. then a bit of positivity kicked in and thought what about a pond!?.
by (4.8k points)
@atlante would you be a able to maybe get a few of the neighbors round after lockdown to volunteer to do the digging, you keep them supplied with tea, sarnies, biscuits and cake, should do the trick lol
by (360 points)
@tullis8206 Baker not really they are all on zimmers to be fair . it's a place where you come to either die or mend you heart. . think im somewhere in between!?
by (4.8k points)

I’ve just dug a 4x3 pond by hand in clay soil. Clay is actually good to dig as it stays in big lumps instead of falling apart. Don’t know what the name is but I used the longer thinner spade which made light work of it.

@fungoid2107 grafting spade
by (660 points)
@tullis8206 Baker Haha it was graft alright! Better than the gym any day
by (360 points)
@fungoid2107 oh god thats what I'm scared of. I might just get a hole and want to bury myself!
by (660 points)
If you don’t want to dig then maybe a small water feature using an old sink or large planter or anything that will hold water would be better. There’s no way around the work if you want a pond. It’s worth it when it’s done
by (360 points)
@fungoid2107 what like a bucket of water!?

Reminds me of my visits to Canada. I was surprised at the frequency with which dynamite figured in their construction projects. Frequently there are tree stumps to remove, plus building regs there require foundations which go below the frost line (which is several feet down due to the very col winters).
