The old gardens had veggies out front and cottage gardens grew plants among veggies. Look up companion growing things like marigolds next to carrots prevent root fly and garlic next to roses prevent greenfly. Tomatoes and cucumbers do better when away from each other. It’s fascinating how the old ways without scientific research proved to be the best way xx

@athapaskan I'm in Yorkshire, I used to love the smell of the old book shops, but there's few of them left now as everyone is going digital ☹

@athapaskan the shandy drinkers are more than welcome to their cement, steel, high prices and stuck up attitudes. I'm more than happy here up North

I’ve got two boisterous dogs and I’ve just fenced off a patch in the back garden with bean sticks and chicken wire- so far so good!

If you are in the United States a food garden in front could get your house taken away. I wish I was joking.
by (980 points)
@shemeka why's that then?
by (3k points)
@muck HOA’s are able to make rules about nearly anything they want, and are enforceable by fine, or removal. Some cities have also outlawed front gardening as an obvious eyesore (somehow) We have our legal bribery system and lawn product manufacturers to thank for the situation.
by (980 points)
@shemeka so it's basically a money making scam by th big companies then?
by (3k points)
@muck in city ordinance situations mostly yes. HOA’s not so much, however companies like Senske in particular require it as part of their maintenance contracts with HOA’s. The rest of the time it is the usual entitled people making everyone miserable.

Yes, I've made mine in the front away from my dogs who ruin everything in sight! The only thing is the veg might be a temptation to passers by.

I think it would depend on how exposed your front garden is, mine doesn’t have a fence or anything stopping people coming in so although there’s a huge amount of wasted space out there I won’t use it because I don’t want people coming in and helping themselves. If it’s blocked off then definitely use up the space.

@bluecoat can't you put a fence up, or is it one of those communal gardens?
by (570 points)
@bluecoat yes, it's fenced x
by (4.9k points)
@muck no it’s our garden but for whatever strange reason no one in this street has one, it’s very odd.
by (4.9k points)
@righthanded definitely do it then! x
by (980 points)
@bluecoat I'd start a trend off then, lol

No however you can get some great salad and veg in different colours. Chard, rainbow chard, beetroot etc will give different leaf variations to the usual. All the best
