Geraniums are bomb proof. They can be neglected and still bounce back. Various colours, I love them.

@hic77309 only if you don't suffer with slugs and snails.
by (590 points)
@parlando283 I use crushed dried egg shells round the plants
by (1.6k points)
Apparently slugs and snails don't like coffee grounds but most plants like/tolerate it

@hic77309 I’m going to try this, do I need to worry about it attracting rats?

Osteospermum. Lots of different colours available. They spread well and close their petals at night.

Geraniums or cranesbill - the blue purple flowers in left of this pic. They come in other colours too! The thrift (white flowers) comes back well, so does dianthus (not in flower yet) if it’s in a spot it likes. I’ve got some dyer’s chamomile behind that which are pale yellow daisies and they are drought tolerant and are going really well.

I have an area planted only with bulbs , lupine and red hot pokers, really effective and fairly cheap and easy to create. With a wee bit reading up it’s fairly easy to have colour from March right through till the first hard frost, well worth a try if you have a corner to fill

Heucheras are a big fav of mine. As it's the foliage that's the interest, they always look good. They may reduce back to the roots in a harsh winter but many will continue to grow as evergreen through mild winters

There are so many, my recommendation is visit the garden centre once a month, look in the perennials (which means comes back every year) and choose 1 or 2 plants that you like that are in flower. Then in coming years you will always have some colour throughout the year. Try and get a few that are evergreen as well so that your garden doesn't look empty in the winter.

Yes foxgloves are not good to have around if you have pets or children, they are very pretty, but if the sap from the stem gets on your hands they can be dangerous, x

I've seen alot of folk comment about holy hocks and foxgloves these are actually biennial plants so dont in theory come back each year. They self seed and flower on the following years growth then die. If you want to grow biennial plants you set seeds away each year so you have a constant crop to put in to replace your plants that have finished flowering. Other wise you will only get flowers every other year. You need to search for perenials if you want flowers each year. The best thing I've ever had is Bowles mauve flowers all year round and is evergreen (unless we have a really cold winter) Xx
