Hi, i have a wall around my garden (cornish stone wall) its not high enough to stop passers by seeing in. Im thinking of concreting the top of it and finding some kind of fencing posts to go around the top give me a bit more height /privacy. Im clueless lol so need some advice, will it be as simple as cementing the top and sticking some edging or short posts in?  I don't want it to look rubbish. Any ideas please? Can u buy cement already made?

If it’s a porous stone don’t use concrete - the stone will eventually blow out.

Can you add more stone to make it higher? Or put trellis on a frame ?

That’s a beautiful wall. I think I’d go with putting in posts on the inside to attach trellis to. It would be a shame to cement (or similar) the lovely top edging. Then you could train a climber along, but keep the climber trimmed tight to not cover up the wall - but I’m certainly no expert.

@separator33734 yeah im trying to appreciate it as its probably pretty expensive to go buy the stones, but at the same time i just wish it was built a little higher. When its all fully clear or weeds looks nice but too inviting for neighbours to stop for a chat, ha some days id just like a bit of privacy. Mm need to consider my limited options.

@babylonia555 , maybe someone can suggest how to attach trellis along the top without the need for expensive posts? But without spoiling they original wall?

@separator33734 yeah this is my aim, i did think about those little posts you can get for edging but there's no way of them staying up unless cementing the top but not sure. I dont know weather im best off just paying a professional to fence off the garden and have it just inside the wall, which would be ashame really. And expensive

@babylonia555 , we’ll personally I’d want to keep the wall to look at, so if you can get the same professional to put in posts and a half trellis. Or maybe extending the height of the wall by 2 ft wouldn’t be as expensive as you think it may be? Have you got a local agricultural college /heritage school that may take it on as a project for traditional wall building trainees maybe?

Hi Marley, I agree that trellis is your best bet. You could create a narrow border along the bottom of the wall by removing the turf, add some compost to bring the level of the earth up then plant climbers dotted along your border. Try things like clematis, honeysuckle, Russian vine, Virginia creeper these are all fast growing but will still take a few years to establish. Meanwhile try growing sweerpeas, climbing nasturtium, black eyed Susan etc and maybe even some runnerbeans these will cover the trellis this summer if you get plug plants in the ground now. Hope that helps x

@dah ah okay, thanks! That sounds like a good idea. I'll be checking that out tomorrow, ive left it like this for 2 years but its time to sort it. I like that idea though and sounds like something i can do myself xx

That wall is beautiful &, so not to cause any damage to it, I'd put posts in and attach trellis to them & get climbing plants to wrap around them. Which could buy an artificial type 'till they grew to a suitable coverage Also IF you do get trellis' s maybe paint them & posts in a grey colour to blend in with wall
