Is "google_product_category" a requirement when I create a Google shopping feed? Products are clothes.

The google Product category is used as a factor when you go up and bid against your competition. So it's good that that match up. I would also add a price sale column to your excel. Then you can get a "sale icon" on your pla ads if you have a sale

Yes it is. If you use a ecomm site you can normally map google categories to your website categories

There are additional requirements for apparel, like including a line item for each variation. Not the easiest place to learn Shopping.

It used to be a required field. But now if you don't provide any value, Google will automatically add a category. You should check if they are, but I've found these to be pretty accurate.
