Quick question for you ladies and gents: If you're bidding on a phrase match, let just say "house inspection" and then have another campaign and ad set with keys words like "pre purchase house inspection" phrase match, will you be bidding against yourself? Or will you get a cheaper click if someone types in "pre purchase house inspection"?

Hi Aaron, You could set 'pre purchase' as a negative keyword in your 'house inspection' campaign/ad group so that searches on 'pre purchase house inspection' can only be served by that particular ad group.

You will never bid against yourself. You can partecipate to an auction with only a KW per account. Surely you can use negative kW in order to drive traffic to the KW you want but you can't bid against yourself. The system will pick the best performing KW for you to partecipate

I work with home inspectors also. I am surprised you have a separate campaign for pre purchase inspection, as usually the volume is so low. I only break keywords out into separate ad groups or campaigns when we need more IS for that keyword, and usually only higher volume keywords.

You’re not bidding against yourself, per say, but rather may be hindering the performance and ad rank of the other ads with similar keywords. If you’re using the same ad copy, same bid and going to the same page, there’s no reason to separate them out into unique ad groups.
