One per campaign is a bit much, unless it is high volume and very high CPC.

Why not elaborate and provide some insight/value?

@planoconvex6887 Because that's a whole youtube video. We can provide advice. but not paragraphs. Really not that hard to watch a Youtube Video on Google Ads for Beginners. At least learn the basics. keywords is one.

Too much time to manage. Use automation and variables instead

What is recommended by Google is not what works in real .

I would try one keyword per account if that would work better

One Keyword per Ad Group. The reasons you are doing SKAGs are: 1) control over the Ad so you can manipulate the Ad Relevance & Landing Page experience elements of the Quality Score. Create an ad group for the keywords "plumber west virginia" then ad into the Ad Headline 1 "Plumber West Virginia" and then send people to a Landing Page with "Plumber West Virginia" text. 2) Search Term Performance Data in order to see search term patterns.

@overlie3737 . and Google fucked it up by pushing 'close variations'.
by (2.9k points)
@overlie3737 sorry George. That strategy doesnt work well anymore. Your better off with dynamic keyword insertion and dynamic headlines.
by (9.1k points)
@vulgarism7314 fortunately (or not, depending on your point of view) SKAGs are very much alive in countries like Greece (which is where I live and where the majority of my clients are. People write queries with a very specific way which is bad Grammar and Vocabulary if you add them in the same way in your ads. For example people will write "υδραυλικοσ αττικη" (plumber in attica) but the proper way to represent it in a text is "Υδραυλικός Αττική". It is the same but slightly different.

@overlie3737 1. Greek language is not widely used and that's why 2. Your are happy that Google (still) does not 'understand' Greek language well.
by (9.1k points)
@raynell9 It is my belief that even though Google has loosened the match types you can still have a pretty solid SKAG-ish strategy that works very well.

@overlie3737 Not in English anymore

@overlie3737 dynamic keyword insertion inserts the keyword triggered, not the spelling error, and you have a default keyword as well.

SKAGS aren’t future proof. If you want to build campaigns for scalability you need to focus on what we call “intent based ad groups”. The algorithm is getting more and more sophisticated. Split keywords per intent and create the best user experience for users. Feed the right and enough data and you are set for performance.
by (16.1k points)
@afternoons9525 You need huge amount of data to feed the algorithm with enough 'food'. For small accounts it's better to have as much control as possible.
by (1.6k points)
@raynell9 there’s an exception to every rule.
by (16.1k points)
@afternoons9525 There are more exceptions than 'rule's fits' . and I don't want my small account (paid with my money) to feed the algorithm that helps the big accounts  I realise that I'm a dreamer and the world is turning.
by (170 points)
@raynell9 your account may not feed the biggest ones, but the user propensity to engage with ads is shared across all accounts
by (16.1k points)
@azrael479 The data for each user is collected by Google. Don't tell me that they don't use that data .
by (170 points)
@raynell9 of course they do, it helps them maximize value at the interaction level.

I recently took over an account basically using Single Keyword Campaigns. A complete disaster. I can not fathom a single reason anyone would ever do that. And the guy that built the campaigns can't come up with any justification either. Definitely do not do that.
