Callrail which I also use to track Facebook ads and Google My Business calls.

Hey Tammy, how do you use CallRail to track FB ads? Are you viewing the data in CallRail, or are you sending a conversion back to FB somehow? We have struggled getting a custom conversion set up for this.

@swansdown I simply set up a tracking number for it and it’s the number that’s on the landing page.

Right, but are you able to report a custom conversion in fb ads?

When we tried to do this CallRail said they didn't know how to set that up. Fb was useless in helping us set it up.

@swansdown I’m not understanding why would you rely on callrail to set up your numbers?

@messina6 I just mean setting up the event in facebook (sorry that was confusing). We can't optimize a facebook campaign around a call because it's an offline event (we can only report on it). I'm wondering if you've found any way around that?

@swansdown No I’m only tracking actual calls

Google tag manager and imported conversion from analytics.

@nomadic Does this only work for call extensions/click to call? And is there a need to dynamically swap the phone number?

Also, you wouldn't be able to track customers who clicked on an ad and ended up entering the phone number into their phone, correct?

@prow2714 correct. Only those that would come from ad words and then click on the phone number on your landing page. You would need a google number or dynamic number for that. We did use word stream for a little while. And they would record the calls for you as well.

However, call extensions and click to call I ment as two separate actions. Call extension would be from ad words. Click to call is on your landing page or website. The tag team can walk you through it. You can chat support and ask about a click to call tag conversion from google analytics. You need to have access to both your analytics and your google tag manager as well as admin access on your ad account.

@prow2714 it’s not hard, but there are a lot of steps that need to be done correctly and so trying to type it out wouldn’t work. It only takes about 15 minutes to set up (and it’s FREE! - well it’s not a paid service I mean)

Callrail - with a dynamic tracking number pool to track Google ads (campaign and ad group level) and other sources. You can use Google native website call tracking setup in the Conversions section - if you want to track calls from google ads only.
