@unapproachable as long as it looks preoffesional it can't hurt. If it looks like a 3 year old made it then don't bother.

@unapproachable if you can't afford to host a basic web site that's not for e-commerce you have bigger problems. Stop thinking about a sales tool, your portfolio, as an expense you can't justify. That attitude will never help you.

Absolutely it's easier to rank with these as they have neat themes, uses cdn for static items, server 99% of time up. but SEO is no longer like before. Now it mostly depends on the quality of your content and how well you give readers what they're looking for

And for good seo, I don't recommend you to spend time on the seo tips around the web more than they need. Just come up with a really good content with the intention to really help users and not rank higher and Google advanced algorithms will put you #1 on Google. Be careful of useless backlinks.
