Was there a post here last week about a barber shop still open for business? Asking for a friend.

Well that’s not essential. Shame on them.

Everyone needs to quit putting other lives at risk. These barbers see a lot of people and their customers can be infected. If they aren’t worried about going there for a haircut then they probably aren’t following the stay at home order at all.

@naquin4075 that's a pretty big assumption to make without knowing any other details.
by (4.3k points)
@charlyncharm I know enough details to see that they don’t want to follow the guidelines. A hair cut isn’t worth risking your life and others lives. (I don’t mean you). This barber is up close for an extended period of time. It’s too risky especially when they are seeing others. I just read a barber died over this nonsense. I’m sure the nurses who are overwhelmed taking care of dying patients wouldn’t be happy about this either. We are making their job harder.

@naquin4075 Let's just say neither parties have symptoms, the barber checks and has no fever, customers are checked and have no fever, barber and customer wear masks and do not talk and they are never face-to-face. Let's say he has wiped down all surfaces with disinfectant wipes and has a door that opens and closes automatically. And customers must use sanitizer upon entry and exit. Pay is electronic only through PayPal, Zelle, or Venmo. Is he or she still jeopardizing lives?

@charlyncharm you can carry the virus with no symptoms.

@naquin4075 I understand. These are the guidelines CDC will put out for those returning to work.

@charlyncharm I work for a retail store. We put tape out to where the customers have to stand 6 feet from us. We limited the hours and then started only allowing 7 people in the store at a time. We disinfected everything all the time. We only allowed them to return cable boxes and not talk to us about anything else. We wore gloves. We now have employees who tested positive. Just tell your friend to be careful. I can’t believe how easily this spreads.
by (1.2k points)
@naquin4075 @charlyncharm Yes, of course the barber and the customer can both take preventative measures. That still doesn’t eliminate the risk entirely, so there is still a possibility of continued infection. For something thats essential like a grocery store, its a necessary risk. For the barber whose income depends on it, it might be a necessary risk. For a regular person just wanting a haircut? Not worth it and borderline irresponsible in my opinion.

@naquin4075 sorry to hear about that. People out for any reason, work or otherwise are dangerous. They wear gloves to protect self but wear the same ones for all customers. bad. They should sanitize between but gloves make everyone feel safe. Unless one has their head on straight they are a constant danger to themselves. I see people grab the post office doors then rub their nose. Pumping gas and punching numbers at the pump. ATM use. Do they sanitize immediately after touching? Doesn't look like it. How about when you go out to get your mail? Touching the box to open and what might be on those items? So are we really able to totally prevent infection when people really don't understand how this is spread?

@charlyncharm well everyone has put out this information time and time again. Some people think they are invincible. I’ve mastered not even touching things in my house lol. It’s great. I use my elbows to turn lights on and off. Use my t shirt to open doors. I also use a paper towel to pump my gas. It’s pretty funny. I’m afraid of my own house. My son works at Walmart .

@charlyncharm it’s probably not helping much since it’s airborne.

@naquin4075 I'd make your son do what we do in healthcare. shoes in the garage, never brought in. Never touched with hands. And clothes left at the shower in a basket immediately upon coming home.
by (4.3k points)
@charlyncharm I do make him change his clothes. He complains when I want him in the shower right away. I do have him take his shoes off.

@charlyncharm my barber is open and the barber is making the appointments. Wearing a mask is a must, using hand sanitizer as you walk in is a must, the barber is cleaning the station, equipment and the seat before and after each client! If you have symptoms you don’t get to make the appointment and there is only you and the barber allowed inside the shop at a time. I’m a frontline worker and I have zero issue with this because the barber is taking all precautions necessary.

As a stylist and as much as I would love to be at work, it’s NOT safe! Not for our clients, and definitely not for us and our families we come home to everyday. We all want our hair done but we will all look ridiculous together until it’s safe to do so!

Looked into buying one and they are going for $120 - $150. A much better option. They sold for $40-$50 back in the day I hear.

Nurses and doctors aren’t getting haircuts. There’s a reason they aren’t. Stay at home people, your looks aren’t that important. You’re not seeing anyone anyway, supposedly.

Sorry, your barber is a potential ground zero for a COVID cluster.
by (2.6k points)
@mychal and in 2 weeks when more businesses start opening? Ground zero will be anyone who doesn't know exactly what to do when out.

That said, there's hope for treatment coming out of South Korea:

My stylist will be open May 1
by (2.2k points)
@charlyncharm well yeah, everyone will be as that's when the shelter in place is officially over. Unless they extend it, in which case your stylist will still be closed.
by (1.1k points)
@charlyncharm doubt it.
by (2.6k points)
@winnebago2283 it likely will be extended a couple of weeks however she is scheduling spots for her current clients starting May 2.

In Italy two people related to someone I know died from the virus due to a barber shop situation. Please stay home.

@bipinnate21198 I'm sure if they are clearing her to open it will be ok. Our new norm has to be "out with protection".
