Pluming question!  Realized a faint smell by our upstairs toilet is a sewage smell.Pluming question! Realized a faint smell by our upstairs toilet is a sewage smell. We are not smelling this in the lower level bathrooms. Thoughts? Thank you!

Do you have a floor drain nearby? We have one in our laundry room floor. Once a month, we have to dump a cup of water down the drain to clear out the smell.

We don't. only in the shower, but that's on the opposite side of the toilet. Thank you for trying!

Do you use the shower? I agree a dry drain is the most likely culprit for an upstairs smell of sewer.

Is it set tightly on the wax ring? How old is it?

Hmm. Now that you mention it, It's about five years old but done by a not-so-detailed handyman. That may be the culprit!

@timmi we use this new style sold at Menards, they are not as fussy as wax, but work just as well and are totally diy!

@timmi yep! We have that on 3 toilets, one for about 4 yrs now, no issues. We hate the fussiness of wax rings

We have a smell in our en-suite and no other bathrooms. we have 3. The smell just started this week. I thought it was sewer. We had a plumber come out, but the plumber said it’s not sewer, but rather something probably died in our chimney and we should have the chimney cleaned ‍♀️

That's interesting! May be a critter in a nearby wall. Our chimney is not near our bathroom and there isn't a smell anywhere else in the house.
