Last night we watched old home movies from when I was a kid, and it got me thinking- how will our kids do this when they are adults? What are you doing to record your kids and family? My husband keeps telling me my iPhone is all the camera/video I need but these 30 second clips are not much to look back on one day and where do I upload them? Is there a site where you can compile all these videos from your phone? Do I buy a video camera and if so where does the video go to save it these days?

I upload mine to a private YouTube channel. Grandma and Grandpa can watch on a regular basis now

@derris38446 I like this idea!

@derris38446 I do the same thing. It’s great to have them all there and they are so easy to access!

You can take more than 30 seconds of video on an iPhone. All of my pictures and videos from my phone get backed up to Google Photos for permanent storage.

@ballance5926 I know you can I just mean all my iPhone clips are pretty short. It’s not like hours of film like when we were kids
by (2.3k points)
@machinery I get it. Personally, I think a bunch of clips of specific things/events are more interesting than hours of video of nothing in particular.
by (770 points)
@ballance5926 yeah I agree to an extent. But it was nice to set the video camera in the corner and record everyone when we were kids. I feel like when you’re recording on your phone you’re kinda missing out on the actual experience in the moment
by (2.3k points)
@machinery I think maybe no one ever did that when I was a kid lol. My kids like to take turns recording (with narration of course)/taking pictures which I think is kind of fun, because if/when they watch them as adults, it will be something from their own points of view.

@ballance5926 my son is 6 months old so we aren’t there yet  but good idea!

I always wonder about this! I would love to somehow create home movies but don’t know how to nowadays.

I wonder the same thing all the time. I have Shutterfly albums for photos but what do you do with a million short videos? There should definitely be a service out there that compiles them all for you.
by (770 points)
@randell3175 yes I also make Shutterfly photo books which I like better than a million photos in a box like I have from my childhood but these short clips are killing me lol. I wish I knew how to invent this service and go on shark tank

@machinery right?!?!? I am just waiting for someone to be on shark tank with this product.

I back up my photos and videos with prime photos. I have to pay extra for unlimited video. We can watch them on the TV with the fire stick.

But now I'm thinking about it, technology changes so quickly, prime and fire stick might not be an option when they're older. I wonder if prime can put them on a disc or something.?

We watch videos from our iPhones on our Apple TV. Some of our clips are 30 seconds, but many are much longer. Is your goal just to watch videos on your tv?
by (770 points)
@grease I just want my son to have something when he is older- to preserve his memories
by (930 points)
@machinery aah, I wasn’t thinking of passing them down. My parents never took home videos. I would think saving them to a shared google or iCloud Drive would be easiest.
by (770 points)
@grease my father is no longer with us and watching our happy memories with him is so special to me now

Apple creates videos of our Live Photos, which is nice. I plan to take longer videos on my iPhone. I often do that when we are on vacation. Otherwise, it's the short clips.
by (770 points)
@sullivan96 and then what will you do with the videos to save them long term?
by (20.4k points)
@machinery as the apple created video plays, or at the end, I email it to myself and save on the cloud in a folder I call "happy memories. "

Create a gmail account and then email them all to your kids. Give them access to the account info when they turn 18.

I bought a cheap video camera on Amazon a few years ago. We usually only use it for holidays and birthdays but all the videos are saved into cards.

My husband takes all of our videos and photos from our phones and makes an end of year video. He puts it chronologically and to music and we watch it on Christmas Eve. They are about an hour to an hour and a half. He’s been doing this for the past eight years. We give copies to the grandparents, too. Our kids love watching themselves grow up! It’s the best thing ever!

@corpsman Houston Catani omg how that’s amazing!

@corpsman Houston Catani Wow! This is perfect! Do you know his process?
by (230 points)
He uses wondershare filmora. It may have been free for PC. You drop all your photos and videos onto a timeline and then add music over it. It also still has the original sound from the videos, so you can still hear your little babies voices. ❤️ We always make sure to take our pics and vids horizontally so it fills the tv screen when we watch. Otherwise, you have black side bars.

@corpsman Houston Catani thanks so much!

I use Google photos. It backs up all my pictures and videos every day. these can be shared to other devices. You can give access to another person by creating folders and allowing sharing.

You can also take them to Memory Keepers in Naperville on a flash drive or hard drive and they will do it for you. It’s on my “to do” list
by (770 points)
@ptolemaic any idea what they charge? And what do they put them them on?
by (970 points)
I can’t remember, but I remember thinking it wasn’t outrageous for my peace of mind. I’m pretty sure it’s a disc.
by (1.3k points)
Michelle. I thought the prices were reasonable. They can put items on a CD or possibly a flash drive. There also might be an email link they send so you can download things.

My parents didn’t have a video camera. I’m actually kinda glad they didn’t ‍♀️ I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything by not having videos of my childhood.

@provender953 i love watching mine but more so since my dad passed away
