My 8 year old is in 2nd grade in 203. I spend hours trying to get him to do the work, but when he actually sits down and can focus, it’s 2-2. 5 hours usually. We had a really tough math day on Wednesday and it was more like 4 hours.

How about you @spitball?

@attalanta I have a 2nd Grader in 203 as well. I would say 90 minutes tops for most days. But he is my focused one. My others are not so focused.

3rd grade boy goes to a Montessori school in Oak Park. We start work at 9:00 am and finish at 4:30 after his after school class through zoom has ended (today it is theater). There is a lot of downtime to do riding a bike, walk around the block, build something with boxes, do a puzzle. I mean “work time” about 4 to 4 1/2 hours a day. But broken up quite a bit. Very much like his normal day.

The 203 standard for a 5th grader is 50 min for math and 50 min for LA and then add in science (we do it even though it is optional). Add any specials.

@athematic40557 same! Illinois Standards are terrible! It was better when it was E-learning. Once it went to remote learning, it went to the crapper! 204 remote learning sucks.
by (7.2k points)
It’s tricky. We’re in 204. My 2nd grader typically spends 45min. Maybe up to 2 hours on a more loaded day when she’s not into it and dragging her feet. But I know some of her friends spend much longer than she does. She loves school and is advanced in some aspects. ISBE gave all districts minimum and maximum times to abide by (someone posted the chart above) and within that time they need to accommodate kids that are less focused up to kids that are advanced. So for some kids (like my oldest) the work is done quickly. Our 2nd grade teachers issued a survey of how long work was taking to get an average over all students to see if they needed to adjust workload the next planning day. I think they’re doing the best they can within the state mandates. Parents can always supplement at home - we are as much as possible (aka if I’m not totally exhausted ) with extra reading, arts/crafts, cooking (math skills for measuring), everyday activities that we try to sneak math into, science experiments, and obviously TONS of time outside. My 204 kindergartner is anywhere from 45 min to 1-1/2 hours depending on how much I can convince her to do . She is not super interested in school work.

I think answers will be skewed because it also depends on the child, learning styles, parent availability, etc. something that may take a child 10 minutes, might take another child 30. It isn’t the curriculum we should worry about. Every child will be different and parents shouldn’t stress.

I am a teacher and here are my recommendations to parents. Do what you can. If it’s too much don’t do all of it. It’s not like your student will be penalized. We’re only allowed to raise grades and not penalize students. So make the schedule the best for you and your family during this time.

We limit it to no more than 2 hours per day for our 3rd grader. We are in district 203 but they attend Calvary Christian. Our kindergartener is doing workbook pages, typing, reading and coloring. He’s done in about 1-2 hours. The only days that run a little longer are Mondays and Thursdays for their 45 minute zoom sessions (class meetings and reminder reading time).

I read a chart that time depends on age. We probably spend an hour or two but it’s spread throughout the day because his attention span is not great. His teacher said to expect 1 minute per year of attention span. So my son is 7, so expect 7-10 minutes attention per assignment.

This is a very interesting question. Enjoyed reading some of the responses. I unfortunately find myself having to E-mail the teachers and remind them that I work in Healthcare and am still working outside the home every day 7:30am - 5pm or so. My son is 8th grade, D204. So honestly I wish I knew what he was doing and for how long! But by the time I get home, change clothes, wipe down my car with SaniCloths, cook dinner, etc, I'm waaaaay too tired to begin E-Learning discussions at 7-8 pm at night. I HOPE (changing that word to the word KNOW) teachers realize some kids are truly on their own with all of this.
by (1.3k points)
Teachers are just doing what ISBE and district administrators are requiring/asking them to do. The remote learning is supposed to be less time than the e-learning before spring break
by (940 points)
Hello- Good afternoon Team 7-0 parents! I hope everyone is doing well. Today marked the beginning of another week of e-learning for our students. Team 7-0 will continue to use our google classrooms for assignments. Assignments will be posted daily. Teachers will be checking and grading assignments on a regular basis. If you or your student has any questions please feel free to email us at anytime. Take care.
by (940 points)
It's E-mails like this that kinda freak me out honestly!
by (2.5k points)
My kids are ”on their own” with remote learning even though I am working from home. I am available to help of they get stuck but I do not check in or manage any part of their day. I do, however, pay attention how long they are on the Chromebooks. My kids are all in elementary school. I don’t want to add stress to them and really think the rest of the school year is a wash. I am glad they have something to do while I work but I am not stressing over the details.
by (1.9k points)
@hetaerism376 Freeland Corman - I am with you. I am a single mom working out of the house. After getting a few emails about some assignments not being done I sent them an email letting them know my kid (middle School) is on his own. That things may not get turned in on time but I will get him caught up. Somethings were easy (as in he just didn’t hit the turn in button) and others things he was just overwhelmed with and we eventually worked through it. His new schedule (vs the one before spring break) is much more manageable since they are only doing certain subjects on certain days and have a “catch-up” day on Wednesday’s.
by (940 points)
@klusek894 Wonderling Hmmmmm. Thank you for that info for sure! I have not received an Email about certain subjects on specific days. I think I read all of the Emails. That would make it way more manageable. I’ll definitely ask my son about it! We must have the same kind of student as he’s forgotten (somehow!? ) to hit the submit key a few times too. I think I became unglued with this E-Learning because on day 3 or 4 I received an Email from his math teacher (who I do think is wonderful) at 3pm saying my son had not turned in his math worksheet for that day! I was like ! WHAT!? Dealing with easing patients concerns about tests and Covid right now - I’ll do the best I can! Think I became a little jaded to the whole process after that Email. I think I was kinda planning on catching up on the weekends until then. ❤️ Best of Luck to you!
by (1.9k points)
@hetaerism376 Freeland Corman - Yes, my anxiety went through the roof when the emails started rolling in! I think we can only do the best we can given our situation.

We are at St. Raphael, my 1st grader has approximately 4 hours including zoom meetings with teachers multiple times a day. My 5th grader had 5 zooms today alone w teachers and band instructor. Today was about 5 hours for the 5th grader but some days have been longer. They have been using lots of resources to help these kids stay busy and on track. I've been majorly impressed with our teachers ability to transition into this. We started the first Monday of the shelter in place and besides spring break have been going since.

We are at St. Raphael and my 3rd and 6th graders are moving through their curriculums. Learning new lessons in all subjects: ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies, Spanish, Music, STEAM (Art & Tech), P. E., and Religion. They have live Zoom classes and recorded lessons spread out throughout the day/week. My kids love it and are staying completely engaged with their learning. They start their day at 8:30 and depending on the day end between 1 and 2ish (including lunch/recess/snack break). My 6th grader is completely independent with his schedule and classwork and I help here and there with my 3rd grader although she's getting more independent the longer this goes on. Both have their own chromebook and laptop from school along with all of their books. I like that they are learning and turning in graded work and it takes up a majority of their day because without sports/extracurriculars right now it would make for extremely long days without it. I've been very impressed and happy with how all of our teachers are handling this and adjusting when needed.
by (1.4k points)

Despite the fact that the e-learning program was approved few months ago in our district.

I have two babies, a almost 1 y. o and 1 month. It’s hard but we make it work. My 2nd grader needs one on one with his work like writing, math and navigating his chrome book. I’m glad I’m involved with his e-learning but will our students fall behind?
