Hey Mamas Question for those with daughters who have hit or will soon hit puberty, did you change your pediatrician to a gynac or simply switched to a female doctor? My daughter is at that in between stage and will be due for her well-visit within the next few months so wanted to get some guidance from those with experience. Please advice. Thank you!

We have our children see a family doctor since the day they were born. I have seen her since I was a teenager and I can tell you (along with any other person) that knowing your doctor well before you “need” to talk about sexual stuff is a lot easier. I love my doctor, my husband switched to her when we met, and both our kids go to her so as long as she doesn’t leave they have known her for their whole life and when the time comes they need to talk about sexual things or even just uncomfortable things they will be more comfortable

No need to switch until you know they are sexually active, pediatricians are fully capable of taking care of child until they are 18. However if their are issues with periods (abnormal pain or abnormal bleeding) then you may want to consider. If she is uncomfortable with pediatrician might want to consider also. You don’t “need” to but you can if you want to.

Kept with family doctor (does peds as well) and she is female. This was for both of my daughters. However, my son had a well check with same female doctor and I asked him his opinion and if he would prefer a male doctor (he is 11) and was fine with our current female doctor as well, at least so far. Ask your child as well as they may be able to tell you at this point what would make them more comfortable.

My daughter is 13 (will be 14 in July) and she sees a female pediatrician. My understanding is that there’s no need to see a gyne unless your daughter is experiencing something that is not normal, such as prolonged periods.

My daughter prefers going to the female pediatricians in our peds practice. She’ll go to the guy if she’s sick, but not for an annual checkup. We’ll switch to an ob-gyn practice when she’s older. We’ll go to the practice I go to, but she wants to see a different doc from me (for several reason unrelated to the quality of the doctor, because she’s an amazing doc! ). It’s a good thing that practice has a lot of amazing doctors

They don’t need to see a gyne until 21 unless they are sexually active or having a specific issue. And don’t let them pressure you into the hpv vaccine. Do your research on that.

We did a gyne just for birth control and stayed with pediatrician until 18. Then we switched to internist and still kept gyne. No need for gyne unless there’s an issue or ready for birth control.

We stayed with our regular pediatrician because she's known him her whole life and he's fantastic. My son's stayed until they were to big for the exam table . Anyhow, for delicate matters he has a fantastic female physicians assistant (or maybe NP? ) that has made my daughter so comfortable.

We have not switched. My daughter has serious medical issues and needs many referrals (we have an HMO) and I can’t imagine switching. He has also been her doctor since birth.

Pediatric until 17/18 and then to internal med/GYN per the advice of all parties. All female doctors. (my mom was a nurse and we were with our family doctor into college years)

My son just turned 10 years old and my pediatrician started talking about puberty that we need tohave that talk with my son. My husband can do that. We like your sons doctor and I am staying with him. He also gets ADD meds from him.
