Esalon is awesome. I just used their color and my hair feels amazing and the color is beautiful. They are real hair stylist so you answer some questions and you get your personal stylist that mixes your color and sends you a kit with directions.

@heppman I was wondering what online hair dye worked good.
by (850 points)
@heppman this is what I use too. I’ve used it for years and really like it.

Just so you know it’s illegal in Illinois for a licensed professional to sell you professional color to do at home
by (1.9k points)
@gable why is that?
by (290 points)
@rowenarowland because you have to be licensed to use it.
by (680 points)
And also- because our liability insurance doesn’t cover us should you drop color in your eye or melt your hair off.
by (3.9k points)
@rowenarowland that’s from the Illinois department of professional regulation. Stylists can face fines or losing their license for selling professional products to unlicensed individuals. For me it comes down to ethics. If they’re willing to break the rules on this, who’s to say they’re following other regulations such as sanitation?
by (680 points)
Not worth it for professionals.
by (1.9k points)
Totally! That’s interesting! I hope my question didn’t come off rude I was just very curious
by (3.9k points)
@rowenarowland not at all! I’m a stay at home mom but I keep my license up and still take a few clients. Even my mom and mother in law aren’t getting their hair colored by me right now. (I get guilt tripped almost every day about it) I love making people feel better about themselves, and it kills me to say no, but I want this whole thing to blow over faster. Then EVERYBODY gets their hair colored
by (330 points)
@gable hahaha I heard today
by (680 points)
I am DYING to go back to work. The state of Illinois has come down hard on stylists- which is unfortunate considering they are one of the hardest hit industries right now. My advice would be, stick it out in solidarity for your stylist. We want to color your hair just as much as you want to color your own
by (710 points)
@untruthful6695 Elizabeth Thank you for responding in a non-combative way to educate those of us who would truly have no idea of what laws and regulations are in place for professional stylists.

I do ESalon (a box kit), but really love it. You take a pretty comprehensive quiz and a colorist contacts you about what tones you want to see.

Not shipping, but am making touch up kits for porch pick up for my clients for touching up the greys.
by (3.9k points)
@funches just so you know, you can face repercussions if you’re caught selling professional color.

@grosmark I’m a licensed hairstylist and for my clients I’m recommending dphue. Check w your stylist. They could recommend the correct color to use and if they’re signed up as a partner they get a commission. So, you’d be helping out your amazing stylist too!

I use Overtone color conditioners in between trips to visit my fab stylist! I love the purple, but for gingers and brunettes, they have more natural options! Bonus, my hair feels amazingly soft and it smells delicious!

I was planning to do a peekaboo mermaid does anyone sell three different colors for less than $20 total? I need the hair bleach too. Looking for Turquoise and blue (I have purple). If someone has half a bottle of each of those colors that they want to part with I’ll take it off your hands for $$$.
by (4.1k points)
@riedel768 no color especially 3 colors plus bleach costs $20 or less‍♀️
by (12.7k points)
@rowenarowland Preston meant to change it to two. I guess I can go to Jewel and get them. they were $8. 99 each. Just thought I’d ask if anyone has any colors they want to sell half of.
by (4.1k points)
@riedel768 good luck! Just wait like the rest of us and get it done the right way. If not be prepared to pay a lot of money to get it fixed or keep doing it yourself
by (290 points)
@rowenarowland Preston what is happening
by (4.1k points)
@constrictor7 girl. I don’t even know‍♀️
by (12.7k points)
@rowenarowland Preston . I have done it before. It’s fine. I mean it may not be up to salon standards but I am also not someone who does stuff through the salon.

There are color sprays to use right now. You screw up your own color, you don’t want to see the amount it will cost to fix. Minimum $100/hr. Stylists should NOT be giving out color kits!

Salons should be open. wear protective gear.
by (290 points)
@sundae50769 no, we shouldn’t be. Think about your average salon appointment . we have more physical contact with you than at your doctor appointment. The masks don’t work after minutes, and the amount of people a stylist touches a day would be a breeding ground.
by (10k points)
You make good points. Limit your customer appointments. Take their temps Wear a gown and all shud be well. Theres got to be a way. you guys are essential
by (290 points)
@sundae50769 I wish there was a way honestly, but it’s too close and too much contact. And we don’t have gear we could wear that would cover enough. I’m sure when we do reopen, things will be different. New protocol and the problem is there is no answer for that yet. So, for now we all need to just put a hat on and be patient. Trust me, my hair is a mess too.
by (10k points)
Thank you for all the work you do. Can you imagine all the women in the country looking like crap but it doesnt matter as we re not going out anyway. lol I am doing my own pedi tonight. All is well. My grandsons hair is so long he has to wear a hat. Sonexarectrying to cut their own hair. No we need you talented beauticians.

This stuff works great in a pinch. Only need to do roots. You won’t mess up your overall color. The spray works good too. I suggest putting it on a paper towel or Kleenex and rubbing it in otherwise it feels kind of gross on your hair and doesn’t look like you sprayed a line on your head!

I use professional dye from Salleys called wella I have dark hair and use it to cover lighter brown growth and some greys. I use a demi with a 10 volume developer. It's super easy. If you have questions I'd be happy to help. I have been doing my own touch ups for years saving tons of money. now if your looking to go lighter I cant really help there.
by (5k points)
@zosima35553 Callaghan Jackowski we as stylists would love for you to continue to use our professional options. It’s our careers that we’ve educated for you. We are a proud industry. As I try to understand you doing it at home, we are making a living from our education, continued education, sanitation practices and the ability to show you compassion through conversation. No mess at home
by (1.2k points)
@dipteran5435 completely understand where you are coming from and I'm not trying to take away from a hairdresser. just giving some options for others in tough times. I enjoy doing hair and wish I went to school for it! (Maybe one day) I have been doing my own for 10 + years using professional dye from Sally's (saving hundreds of dollars) and love the satisfaction from doing it. I do still occasionally go into the salon for color and I see no difference however it's nice to have someone else do it from time to time :). I dont cut my own hair now that I would really Jack up haha

I have personally know stylist that have gotten their accounts at the supply warehouses suspended for purchasing "more than personal use" about of products right now. As a professional stylist, I can't believe you're even asking this of a person that spent tens of thousands of dollars for a professional career to break the law! Get some root shadow or spray and wait for your professional stylist to do it that hasn't made a dime during the shut down.
by (1.2k points)
@peary I doubt she really understood the ramifications.
by (1.3k points)
@peary not everyone knows that. I didn’t know you guys could lose your license, why would I? I’m a sleep tech, do you know all my professional rules and standards of conduct? Maybe try giving people the benefit of the doubt
by (2.5k points)
This hasn't been the first post like this since the shut down that people have been asking about getting their hair done "on the side" that NUMEROUS stylists have responded to in the exact same manner. It's a very touch subject for those of us out of work. Especially that are self employed, so unemployment isn't currently an option. And then to also see in this thread that there ARE stylist that are breaking the law infuriates me even more. I hope they do in fact lose their licenses. I so glad so many people gave their stylists names that were doing it so I could take note. I used to work with 1 in fact.
by (330 points)
@peary she’s not asking anyone to do her hair, she’s simply asking for the color. If someone had box color at their house , would you deem them the same way if they colored their hair ? If someone has extra of what she needs, there is nothing wrong with purchasing and SHIPPING , literally no contact and then doing it yourself. She didn’t ask for someone to go and buy it for her and risk their license. She asked if anyone is shipping, meaning they have it themselves and she can purchase from them. This group man has so much shaming. Maybe people in isolation quarantine are having it rough, maybe they need a pickMe up to make themselves feel better, maybe dying their OWN hair helps them with that. You aren’t in anyone else’s shoes but your own, so please for goodness sakes stop trying to wear a shoe that ain’t yours.
by (2.5k points)
Purchasing professional color from a licensed hairdresser is illegal! So yes, I will shame, thanks.
by (3.1k points)
@peary you absolutely can collect unemployment- they have amended the rules to include 1099 and self employed workers. My stylist has been collecting
by (2.5k points)
@wharve yes, we all applied, we all haven't started receiving anything yet. I'm very happy that your stylist has been 1 of the lucky ones. She's literally the only hair stylist I've heard of receiving anything yet.
by (6.4k points)
@peary totally agree. and @wharve I love that you make it sound so cut and dry. Are you a 1099? . yes we are ELIGIBLE. your stylist actually collecting is a rarity
