As a coin collector I need to point out that these coin designs are created a approved at least one year before minting is started. The release dates are also schedule a year in advance. And that the scientific community has not yet concluded that SAR-CoV came from bats. In fact the person first determined to have this virus (patient zero) never visited the wild animal meat market this virus was initially linked too.

@baelbeer any place around that's honest to look at some old coins

@coverdale Not really to many coin stores around here. The reality is coin shops will generally only pay you around half of what a coin is worth to a collector. Some pawn shops will deal in coins. If it is a common coin that is simply old and in good condition it is probably only worth a couple of dollars at best. As to coin valuation of a rare coin, if it is not professionally rated and certified, its valuation can get to be pretty subjective. And getting a coin rated and certified can get expensive. Of the hundreds of millions of coins minted in the US in the last century there are probably less then 2 dozen "key coins" coins minted in mass but small enough numbers to have high valuation, even fewer that have high valuation because of minting errors (double stamped, of center, etc) and only a couple because most of the minting was destroyed for some reason. The library probably has a coin reference book that could help you determine if you have one of these type of coins. If you do it would be worth having certified so you can sell it at auction. So a coin being old and in good shape does not really make it that valuable. Most of the valuation of silver or gold coins come from how much they weight and the current market value of silver or gold.

@baelbeer thank you

@baelbeer well thanks for letting us know that. I have a bunch of old coins in great condition. I was going to take them somewhere. Even a gold dollar coin 1822 President Ulysses Grant is on it. Mint condition. I guess I will just hang onto them since they are from my great 3x grandma. Stay well everyone

@murine48 A gold coin minted in 1822 with President Grant on it would be suspicious since that is the year he was born. Grant did not become President until 1869. The mint has a centuries old policy of not minting coins with seated or event living presidents on them. Grant left office in 1877 and died 1885. So any coin with Grant on it with a mint date older then 1885 would be seriously questioned by almost all coin collectors. The only coin I know of that featured Grant was the "gold" dollars of the presidental series recently minted. The Grant "gold" dollar was minted in 2011 and in "mint" condition is worth around $2. But I have seen websites advertising the sell of this "rare" coin for up to $6000. I wish that were the case since I a several of these myself that are actually "Proof" with is the best condition possible for any minted coin.

There is no essential difference between "exotic" and domesticated animals. Given conditions favorable to the breeding and mutation of viruses such as factory farms, all animals can be a source of dangerous pathogens.

@prevail I’m being sarcastic. I’ve been talking about this quarter for a month saying it’s a little ironic.
