Anyone have any opinions on bunk beds? What age did you introduce them? Pros? Cons?

I’m a certified pediatric sleep consultant and owner of The Well Rested Club and a previous bunk bed sleeper . I have spoke with parents who have had many sleep issues and/or injuries with bunk beds, and for the most part all of them happened when the bunk beds were in a room with children under 6. Even if the top bunk is intended for an older sibling, it is likely the younger sibling will test it out too! So for me, I would hold off until both kiddos were older than 6. But it would also depend on the children’s behavior and whether or not they are daredevils.

My boys have had them for years and they loved them. Never any injuries. Making the top bunk is a nightmare though ‍♀️

Huge con/waste of money for us. Our boys were about 3-4 and 5-6 They looked great, had the storage steps up the side, allowed room to have more space etc. I thought they’d be great. They were awful. I couldn’t lay down next to or even sit with my oldest kid in the top bunk. There was no night table to rest books on/turn light off when done. You bang your head when trying to get in and out of the bottom bunk. My youngest kid on the bottom couldn’t sit up properly. It was dark underneath because the top bunk blocks a lot of light. Making the beds, changing sheets was hard. They were just not practical for every day life at that age. Fortunately we got the ones that could turn into 2 individual beds so we did that after about 2 weeks. That would be a good back up. Try them out. If it doesn’t work, convert to individual beds with a nightstand in between or put them in an L shape with night stand in the corner at top of both.

Got them when the kids turned 5. I only like them because they take up less space. I can’t easily lay in bed with either of them and making the top bunk is horrible!

We introduced at 3 right after the toddler bed (we didn’t use a crib - we used a floor bed/toddler bed). Our bunk bed is from Pottery Barn and has a a pull out bed under the bottom bunk (trundle). My then 9 year old sleep in the top bunk for a year.

I feel like bunk beds are one of those things you either love or hate them. And honestly Ive had both for my kids. But if you except beds to made like if that's your thing every morning them bunk beds probably aren't for you. Because they're hard to make. We have converted to single beds, and everyone sleeps better because ”johnny” kept rolling over and it kept me awake but then they also have their own space it just works better for us. We also took the toys out of the rooms and made a plat area elsewhere so that really helped. But I miss the floor space! So figure out what your goal is what your expectations are for beds made or meh  whatever we’re sleeping in the beds again tonight anyway.  Either way there really isn't a right or wrong, it's what works best for you

My son got bunk beds at 3 and was able to sleep on the top starting at 5. I totally HATE them! Con. buying two sets of one bedding for 1 kid. then washing them both every time you do laundry because he switches between the beds. CON. friends all want to jump: play on the top. CON. can’t lay in bed with my son easily to read him a book. con. he can’t read in bed as easily on the bottom bunk because there is low light since the light is on the ceiling. I could go on and on! Only plus I have found is there are two beds when he has a sleepover.
