**edited to add: I took the suggestion to call the people who fostered her from the animal shelter and he is going to get me better contact info later tonight. They did tell us upon leaving that if we had to return her that they asked for us to return her to them. She is a terrier pit mix and super sweet. She is also almost 7 months old and probably about 37 pounds. We have 4 kids and she is sweet with them. She also LOVES dogs. But she is a puppy and still very nippy and destructive but is crate trained and pretty much potty trained. Sadly we have to give back a dog we adopted three weeks ago because our son is severely allergic. He had been sick since the day after we brought the puppy home. Finally got him into the Dr and then to an allergist. Was told that he will just get worse and the allergy meds is not a guarantee. So I have called and left a message with the shelter we adopted from and emailed them and I have not heard back from them at all. How long would you wait to hear back from them? I offered in my messages that we would foster her until someone wanted to adopt her but she can't be here long term. Just in case they needed somewhere for her to be. But I have been giving my son an allergy meds and Benadryl for a few weeks already and i am not sure how much longer I can do that to him. I would not surrender an animal for any other reason then this. My son's health is much more important then a puppy

Can you provide info on the breed, age and temperament, maybe someone here could help you rehome him

@franco I would check the agreement signed when the dog was adopted. Many shelters require you relinquish the dog back to them if you cannot keep them.

@franco that is true they are all volunteers so it takes time. They may also be looking for another foster family to place him in.

I’m so sorry! I know someone desperately looking for a dog. Can you please message me details.

Which shelter? Chances are you signed a contract saying you’d return the dog to them. Do you have an email address for anyone there? Most shelters right now are working on skeleton crews. How long has it been since you left a message? Also, just as a side note, don’t let anyone tell you it’s ok to go against the contract. If you breach it there could be consequences. Only wanted to say that bc of some of the comments made. I worked at a Humane Society for many years. It’s not ok to rehome an animal on your own if you’ve signed something saying you’ll return it. I’m not saying you would. just wanted to throw it out there since others are suggesting.

They asked us to return her to them if we had to.

Which is what I plan to do

@camel3 It has to be so hard for your family. I’m sorry you’re going through this. I’m sure they’ll get back to you. Especially if it’s a puppy. I’ve heard many places have lists a mile long of people looking for puppies now. Good luck!

We love her! We really do and we are upset that we have to return her. But we have to do what is best for our son. And he is the one that loves her the most!

What type of breed is the puppy? I’m sure there would be someone interested in giving it a good home.

Do you have the contact info for the foster parent before maybe? Or try messaging the shelter on Facebook too. Keep trying! And check your agreement because many shelters require you give the dog back to them if it doesn’t work out.

I took your suggestion and contacted the foster parents! He is getting me better contact info

I think if you have not heard back in a week it’s reasonable to work to find a home that can care for the dog.

@papilionaceous Grant Streder this is not necessarily true. Especially right now.

Yes. what kind of puppy is it? If your son is sick and they will not respond I am pretty sure nothing bad would come of giving it to a good home and when this all is over letting the shelter know who that person is. I can't imagine having to medicate my child because a shelter cannot call back. I am so sorry.

Yes check your adoption agreement most likely it says you need/have to relinquish the dog back to them.

I work with a rescue, if you want to pm me I might be able to help. Right now any shelter that is still operating is overwhelmed- some places are more eager to take in a “return” than others. I would give them a few days at least. Do you gave any phone numbers you could call? Otherwise you could surrender her to another rescue or privately find a home for her/ if you do private make sure you go to their home and make sure it’s a good forever home, call and check vet references.

Give it a few days and don’t give the dog to anyone else until you talk to the shelter. You probably signed something stating that you need to return the dog to them if it doesn’t work out. It’s just to protect the animals from being passed onto a bad situation ❤️ I’m sorry it didn’t work out for you!

I'm the president of a different rescue locally, if you want to PM me with the name of thr group I can most likely get in touch with someone.

Since you offered to foster id wait a few days because it does not sound as urgent. Most likely there is a contract stating the pup must be returned to the shelter if you cannot keep them. I’d call in 24 hours if you do not hear from them and again on Friday.
