We looked at a house that has a koi pond in the backyard. Anyone have experience maintaining one of these? Is it a lot of work or relatively maintenance free?

I have a pond and parents have a koi pond. Not alot of work, have to make sure it has a good pump. Filters need to be replaced a few times a season, not hard and filters are inexpensive. I don’t have fish in mine, every spring I drain all of the accumulated water via the pump and start with fresh water. I use a few products to maintain clarity in the pond.

We loved ours but filled it in when we had kids. we added UV water system to keep the water clear and it was very low maintenance once we made this change. I hope to get another one when our kids are older! Good luck!

@diacid8 fyi my sellers have aquascapes come 2x per year to service Koi pond and that's about it. But Koi can live up to 27+ years so they are a commitment. But large ones can sell for hundreds even thousands if you want to sell them

The house we bought had a large koi pond. we had to leave nets on it so the heron didn’t eat the fish and that was an eye sore. It became too much work with winter, cleaning it, keeping kids and toys out of it so we had it filled in. On the flip side, they can be very pretty with some upkeep. Just was not of any interest to us!

Used to have one, replaced it with a pondless waterfall and we love that so much more. No maintenance other than filling water every few weeks.

We have one and love it; although is an added expense. We pay about $400 to have it opened in the spring, my husband closes it himself in the fall. We like the water as clear as possible, we have 11 koi fish so there is some maintenance but nothing over the top. It’s nothing like the maintenance of a pool

@raw95 where do you put them during winter?

@planimetry they stay in the pond. U stop feeding them late fall and they become dormant basically
