I know the flu is going around bad (sister currently has it). Now my 2 yr old started suddenly with a runny nose Monday evening. Yesterday he was really congested and very runny nose. Today add to the above a barking/deep cough. No fever. Anyone had something similar? Any advice as to what helped? I am already doing 1elderberry gummy a day, 1 multi vitamin, vicks, Vit D, tea with honey, and Thankslenol at night. Also saline mist (which is not doing much).

Weve had the flu for 2 weeks. Starts that way and ends about 3 days later with vomit

@ammoniate I was afraid this could be it. My gut was leaning to the flu. Hope you guys are feeling better.

My daughter had the same. The deep barky cough lasted two days and worked itself out into a regular cough that lasted a couple weeks. She did get a fever for a day and a half as well

@transpire colds start slowly with runny nose and congestion. Flu starts with high fever

You usually get a fever with the flu. We have had both strains Flu A and B in our house and fevers of 102. 8 both times with both kids.

If he has a barky cough ibprofin will help with inflammation. I also put baby Vick’s on bottom of feet and chest, humidifier, and put a pillow or wedge under the top of the mattress to prop it up. If he has congestion use nose Frida or an electric nasal aspirator. I just recently bought one and found it to be way more effective.

This is the one I recently bought that a pediatrician recommended. I use it on my 3 month old and 3 year old. Way easier than nose Frida.

Sounds like a cold. My kids had the same thing. I did take my daughter to the doctor because her cough was bad but her lungs were clear. They told me my son would be ok as long as he didn’t develop wheezing while he was breathing. He got the cold we all had last.

Humidifier, Vick’s, Thankslenol and Zarbee’s cough syrup helped us!

@falkner ped is not in today ladies! It’s not to the point of an ER or urgent care visit. Hence the reason I ask. The covering dr. is full. Did speak with the nurse too. Sometimes we just need a little reassurance of what we are doing. Hear from others something that may not have occurred to do. Or see what other have gone through and what the community is going through. Not upset at the suggestion as I understand some may need to be told this. But idk the emoji was needed. Really appreciate all the love, support and advice everyone gives. ❤️

Apple a day pediatrics in Oswego is open 7am-7pm everyday and till 2 pm on Saturday - awesome pediatricians (twin brothers ) we’ve been going there for over 10 years now - always easy to get an appointment  good luck!

@transpire I hope your baby feels better! I didn’t not put up any emoji, I simply said call your pediatrician. And from what you say you did, and got wonderful advice from! My best wishes to you and your family!

In addition to everything you mentioned you are doing, I would suggest to turn on humidifier, and use nose Frieda. Also push lots of liquids

The barking seal like cough could be croup. My son gets it twice a year. Must see a doc. Steam helps break up congestion. But it’s a virus. But my son is given a breathing treatment with a steroid. But it generally starts as upper respiratory which is often linked to a flu bug. His immune might have received it as something else. But one year he started from with croup it went into flu. Most flu situation is lathargic unresponsive type behavior. Poor bodies are to achy to move. Croup does not always have a fever initially. However, flu usually has one. Best to you and your family. With illness wreaks havoc. And beware, you can end up with it. It’s end up being upper respiratory.

I would avoid tylenol. It lowers glutathione in the body and makes it harder for body to detoxify and get better

Omg so sorry to hear. My 2 year old and husband and I had the same thing and each got it within a day of each other, one after the next. Sadly, nothing really helps much except rest, pedialite, possibly airborne Vit C. We threw up for like 6 hrs straight, then it stopped, though the queasiness and nausea didn't, but Dramamine could help you for the nausea and maybe gingerale and pedialite for ghe queasiness. Luckily, we got better in a couple days or so. Its the 24 hr flu bug I believe. So, it goes away quick I think and hopefully for you too.

The flu starts suddenly, colds come on gradually.

We had flu A in our house. Both kids had fevers over 103 at the highest (middle of night) I don’t know why but I didn’t think it was the flu but my daughter tested positive for flu A. My daughter woke up with a super crusted over nose on a Friday. She was better by the next Friday. I was so glad I took her in to the immediate care on Rickert in Naperville! (She’s just under two and did get Tamiflu) we were lucky with no tamiflu side effects other than minor upset tummy. We had cough but wasn’t barky.

Yes, very similar - mine had a horrible running nose, barking cough and it turned into an ear infection so ended up lasting a whole week +. try to clear his sinuses out as much as possible if thats a factor and keep doing what you're doing. I hate antibiotics, but ended up doing it when the ear infection came on because it can badly effect hearing at this age unfortunately, so something to watch for.
