Has anyone requested a tour of public elementary schools before? If yes, who do I contact and was it helpful? Thank you!

I am a teacher and the district I work for (not a Naperville district) does tours for new families but that may not be true in 203 and 204 as large districts tend to have more strict policies regarding these types of things. You should call or email the principal of the school you want to visit.

We took a tour of the school my kids go to. We knew they were going there, but hadn’t closed on our home yet. We just contacted the school.

We have been in 203 for 6 years now. The last time I checked they didn’t allow tours because it is considered a breach of the children’s confidentiality. It doesn’t hurt to ask though.

@scull I’m in district 204 and they have the same No Tour policy. However before the beginning of the school year, at the end of the summer, they do have a day for new families to come in and visit the school. They also have a meet the teacher day either the first or second week of school.

@pinprick yes we have that too. It helps kids a lot with transition if they need it.

I am an elementary teacher as well and I teach outside of the Naperville districts. My school will allow tours with the principal, but only before/after school hours when other students are not present. I would call the school and ask the policy they have in place.

Do they do meet the teacher at the beginning of the year?

@unkempt yes they will allow that for sure. It is my impression that the new rules are in place to protect confidentiality of other students.

@scull that makes sense.

Call the school. They should accommodate a tour.

I have. Principal thought it was a strange request. Wish we would have done more research before we fell in love with the house.

I’m pretty sure you can only go on a tour of a school when no children are present. You can call the school and ask if they have any days you can do that to make an appointment during a break if they’ll be open.

204 schools also have Kindergarten preview night in March/April. Maybe you can attend one of those to get a look at the school.
