Those that have elementary children who normally see a reading specialist or receives reading intervention from anyone else at school. have or is your child receiving support/resources in any capacity during e-learning / remote learning? Do you mind sharing what they are getting and maybe what district you’re in? It’s definitely one of the harder areas to support remotely. just curious what others are doing/getting.

We are 204 my son receives speech services and he did zoom session with his teacher they practiced for 20min and we received notification yesterday that they will also implement a plan for special education during this Remote Learning period.

@cannonball11 I was mainly curious about reading intervention but it’s also good to hear how other services and support are still being implemented. My son gets speech too and their speech team made a google classroom that has some fun online games for the various grade levels to help support speech. So no individualized support or person to person interaction but still working those skills.

We are in 203. Our reading support teachers have office hours daily and today they invited my student and a group to a google hangout to discuss the reading lesson from today’s remote learning schedule.

@nitrogenous was the lesson for intervention support (like from the reading specialist) or was it the reading lesson from their regular teacher?
by (1.3k points)
@glaze the reading support utilized the lesson from the regular teacher. So it was not an “extra”

@nitrogenous that’s cool though she was still trying to support in even that capacity.

@glaze yes I have nothing but positive feelings about how our teachers are handling remote learning and supporting. They have been amazing

Hi my son has a iep. It has been a struggle. I am doing a lot of breaks. I haven’t got a curriculum from the case manager yet. I was told to follow math assignments posted by a homeroom teacher. He does some zearn in morning. we get meltdowns for reading and social studies, thankfully its easy assignments posted by the home room teacher. I feel it easy but not my son. My son in fourth.

@photosensitive is his reading intervention in his IEP? My son’s IEP is being serviced in varying capacities but his reading intervention isn’t really. but it’s not in his IEP.

It is there but i believe tge special needs teacher not a exclusive reading specialist. Reading above comments, i wish my son had a reading specialist which would make his life a little easier.

Our middle schooler has an IEP - and his study skills teacher has been amazing! Daily Zoom sessions available for specific subject (Math, ELA) and as well as optional sessions later in the day to review work/project etc if needed.

I emailed our school principal in 204 on Tuesday regarding students with IEPs and how they will be supported during the remaining of the Elearning school year. Prior to her response I did hear from the specialist and she is working with the main teacher to get a plan in place and I will be hearing from her soon. I think the plan is to have Additional activities for them directly with the specialist whether via Zoom or Phone call with some reading or math worksheets

@ufo527 does she receive reading intervention from a reading specialist?
by (24k points)
Chrissy, yes he will starting Monday and she also helps with math. She just emAiled Me a few mins ago and said she will be sending his support services plan on Monday and we will go from there.

@ufo527 the reading specialist is helping with math?
by (24k points)
@glaze his specialist does both

@ufo527 oh so she’s more part of the special ed team? My son has an IEP for vision but his reading specialist just does reading. and not just for IEP kids but anyone that qualified for reading intervention.

My son receives reading intervention in 203. His specialist provided lessons for us to do with him at home, then right before spring break did a 30 minute lesson on Zoom. He will continue to have those lessons now that we’re back

Yes. She sent us the books she should be readying and how to “grade” her. I email back the grade and the reading specialist adjusts as needed
by (3k points)
@arresting like she sent actual books?
by (390 points)
@glaze online books. It’s not an actual book though, but rather lines of sentences with word count. I have to count how many words per minute she reads and then calculate her accuracy
