Are their any women in here that strength train? If yes, I could really use some advice on getting started. Fyi, I'm not looking for a personal trainer I would like to do it on my own first and a trainer later after I've become consistent.

YES! Strength is my favorite and so empowering as you build confidence  there are several online groups that are free! I like Girls Gone Strong and lady lifting community! I would recommend that you research and focus on form first. Some of the groups you can post videos in and admins will reply, but I also agree with some of the above mentioned comments as you risk injury if you're not lifting properly.

Look up the book Strong Curves. Start with machines as they help your form. Many gyms also have group exercise classes with strength formats like body pump where you can learn free weight forms. Good luck!

I know you’re not going to want to hear this but I would suggest first going with a trainer to avoid injury, expedite results, and get a better understanding of your body. I used to be a trainer but would definitely use a trainer myself to get that extra push. Best of luck!

@sacring Agree, especially with weights you want to know and understand the positions and breathing, then you can go online and use some free 8-12 week programs or apps to set up workouts for yourself

@sacring I also agree. To start, you should use a trainer, then you will have the background knowledge to do whatever you want on your own.

If you’re a member at XSport, try their X-It program. You get the guidance of a trainer but not the cost.

Get it girl! I Crossfit which has great strength training. I live in north Naperville and go to CrossFit 630, they have boot camp and CrossFit. Also love Crossfit thunderbolt which is near rush Copley. Very family friendly and very female oriented! Girl power!

Michele, good advice! CrossFit is very approachable and any CrossFit gym will have a very slow introductory period to ease you in. It’s fun!

I really liked the Kelsey Wells PWR program. It gives you several strength training workouts a week with as much cardio as you want (or don’t want), and it progresses as you move along.

I would highly recommend starting with a trainer. You can do more harm than good to your body if you aren’t doing it right:

I workout a lot and here is my basic schedule. Day 1: back & biceps Day 2: inner/outter legs, calfs, and obliques Day 3: chest & triceps Day 4: quads & glutes Day 5: shoulders and lower back Day 6: abs I do cardio on abs day and another day of my chosing when I'm not to tired. You can definitely condense this type of schedule. Do your research and start out slow.

I agree having a trainer help is a great thing but I know that’s not what you asked for so something that helped me is there is a woman on Instagram that has workout guides from beginner to expert that are really helpful as to what to do and how to progress. Or you could follow her Instagram. She has a lot of educational videos that help when you’re beginning to navigate.

When I don’t go to the gym, I workout with a personal trainer (the best kind that train celebrities) streamed right to my TV in my family room (or wherever! ) talking right to me. There’s specific strength training programs, but also cardio, HIIT, yoga, Pilates, barre, dance. you name it, it’s there. And I’m part of accountability groups for motivation and support that has me feeling the best I’ve ever felt and in the best shape I’ve ever been. It’s an awesome resource! Happy to send more info if it would be helpful to you!

Try something simple that gives you advice on proper form and weights. When I started weight training 20+ years ago, I used the book Strength Training for Dummies and I still reference it

I haven’t in a while but when I did I started with a personal trainer. It helped me understand how to do everything properly and gave me great routines. I would go home after the session and write down the whole routine so I could do it again later. Eventually I felt confident enough to do it on my own and had a great list of workouts to do and the knowledge on how to do them correctly.

I think you should do the opposite! Start with a trainer then go off on your own. You need to have the technique down before you do your own thing. Not saying you can't learn a lot from google but there's nothing like having someone coach you through it. There's also the benefit of having a structured program to go to. I am a Crossfitter and I personally LOVE it. I've never felt so strong and have found myself focusing on what I can do vs. what I look like. It's also essentially a small group lifting class. I'm 44 and am stronger and fitter than when I was 24.
