What should a college student be paid as a summer intern? Today I had the daughter of a friend call me and said that as a business major at MSU she was looking for a summer internship with a Naperville business and wanted to know if I had any ideas. I told her that I would love to have her and asked if she was looking for a paid internship and if so, how much. She told me that it would be nice, but not necessary to be paid. Naturally, I feel that she should be paid, but have no ideas of how much. Suggestions?

My son had multiple internships in IT. He made between $15 -$25 an hour. His friends were also in that range. If this a potential future job employee, pay them well.

@bute6805 I know someone looking for an internship in IT, any companies you would suggest in this area?

@montcalm, my son interned twice at a small local IT company that has been absorbed by a larger company - Informatica. I looked at their website and they do have summer internships, but they’re in Redwood City, California. I would suggest looking at Indeed or Glassdoor. I saw a few opportunities currently listed. Also, my son was offered another opportunity in downtown Chicago that he didn’t take that he got through his Linked In profile. The candidate should set up a Linked In profile if he/she hasn’t already. Often times, especially in this current job market, companies will reach out to him/her. I hope that helps and good luck.

Glass door is a great place to look at rates! Some interns make $9 and some make $20. I think it all depends on the industry and what they’re doing.

I pay my summer nanny $500 per week for 2 kids. If I were an intern and actually paying taxes I’d expect at least $15+. And that’d be on the low end. Otherwise I’d just watch people’s kids for cash.

Don’t be cheap ass. Pay them a decent wage.

@mildredmildrid not trying to be cheap, just looking for guidance. What's fair to you?

Ask the colleges career center . I think it depends on what you have them doing

Not all are paid Some majors give class credit and are required for graduation while others just want the experience listed on their resume or to get hired by that company after graduation.

I conduct employment verifications for DOS and student interns usually make an hourly wage of $10-15.

Not a fan of unpaid internships. They should at least get minimum wage.

$15. If she’s with your co full time she can’t work elsewhere for cash.

I was making $15 a few years ago as a intern. I think it’s wonderful you’re asking in order to give her a fair wage!

When I did my internship in Cardic/Pulmonary Rehab, it was 6 months, unpaid. ‍♀️

$12. 50 and increase as she learns. Ending at $14 or so as she learns! Otherwise she would be working as a retail clerk making a few dollars less.

You have to pay her the IL minimum wage rate unless she is volunteering for an unpaid internship. You can opt to pay more than the minimum wage.

Definetly. Im a university of Iowa student and majority of internships now are paid, many don’t even apply to unpaid. Depends on the scenario but at least as far as the typical student, there’s still financial burdens at hand. I would say a modest pay. Whatever you think her work is worth in that scenario!

Considering Target pays $13, I’d say that’s your floor.

I worked 2 internships in addictions counseling, one for 6 months! They were great experience but they were both unpaid.

$10-12/ hour. $14. 50/ hour is the going rate for FULL TIME CUSTOMER SERVICE in north naperville. I’m a recruiter. If she gets more than $14. 50/hour that is AWESOME
