Any dog trainers in the group? We got a puppy who we love very much 2 weeks ago. He is a lab/husky mix. He is 11 weeks old and over the last week has started biting like crazy. We really need him to stop, help!

He’s teething. redirect to a rope or toy or bone. It will last for a few months until his adult teeth come in. (His brother is doing it too! )

We had that same issue with our lab puppy when he was that age. We worked with Suburban K9 and our trainer was great. Scout is now 5 months old and such a good dog.

@bibliopegy Koehler Glos I second - suburban k9 Nelson is who we use
by (630 points)
@bibliopegy Sabrina is our trainer. We are still actively using her. Glad you are happy with that company too!
by (2.4k points)
@bibliopegy Koehler Glos yes! We used canine dimensions initially (we have a Rottweiler) and it was not really that great for us . we then did a board a train with suburban, followed by intermittent in home, and have him Come periodically as needed (Rottweilers are stubborn! )

Suburban k-9 is the best! We have the best lab/retriever mix and it’s all due to them! He was a disaster when we got him, but now he is so well behaved and such a sweetheart!

For huskies I suggest Outback Dog Training Group lots of helpful stuff. Biggest thing at that age is if they are biting redirect with positive reinforcement to a toy and praise them for chewing biting the toy.
by (690 points)
Huskies and labs are both big chewers. I give my 5 month old husky a kong filled with good things. Purée pumpkin, Greek yogurt and blueberries. Freeze it and give as a treat. This helps with crate training too if you were working on that!

We just worked with a trainer on this with our pup, and she had us use a spray bottle with water on straight spray and squirt him when he was nippy.

Kongs are helpful. They are durable and can be filled with things

Our lab/husky mix went through the same thing. So we redirected with toys and would yelp loudly if he did it to us. We also did not do time outs but we did walk away and close ourselves off from him for a minute, then walk back in and if he did it again, we’d walk away for longer- but don’t let it become a game. Redirection is the biggest thing

He really enjoyed frozen wash cloths to chew on. Or frozen Kong

He’s teething . It’s normal. You can get chew toys to divert, but he’s in pain from it. We kinda just sucked it up while our puppy was teething and would stick a chew toy in his mouth to divert it

Typical behavior for those breeds, definitely do as suggested above and redirect chewing/biting to appropriate toys and reward for desired behavior. You can also try a little bitter apple on your hand/shoes when he is actively trying to bite/chew. the flavor sometimes will deter the behavior but some dogs (all of my labs) are not phased by it (my Chesapeake Bay and Collie couldn’t stand it)

Have you tried yelping when he bites? It helps a lot to teach them what is to much. It’s how they tell each other they are biting too hard when playing. I’ve seen a lot of dogs react well to it and others just don’t care. But it’s worth a try! Just do it every time he gets to rough and redirect with a toy after. Then praise a lot once he’s playing with the toy instead. ❤️
by (2.1k points)
@akin I tried the yelping with our puppy after watching your video! My kids thought I was crazy but she did stop biting immediately!
by (4.2k points)
@balata78 it’s weird but it works!

@akin I also got a stick for her to chew on (can't remember what it's called) at Dog Patch. She LOVES it!

When our lab was a puppy our trainer suggested if she got too rough and nippy when playing to yelp loudly as if it caused you a lot of pain. I’m telling you it worked like a charm! We used Narnia for pet behavior training.

He's definitely teething and this will most likely go on for a while! Bully sticks are great for those teethers super easy to digest and long lasting for some dogs. Also NO HIDE bones are great made of brown rice flour you and raw coating on top of the bones

These are my pups favorite

Hi AnnaMaria. I’m the owner of Cloud K9 Academy in Naperville. That’s very normal behavior for a puppy that age. The key is redirection and removing attention when teeth hit the skin. We launched our new online fusion programs this past week. It would be perfect for you, your pup and your family. It’s always best to invest in their future while they are young before they develop lots of bad habits. I’d be happy to answer any questions you might have.

He's adorable! Might just be a puppy thing. Make sure he has a lot to chew on. Also, sometimes the no bite sprays work because they don't like the taste. or water bottles to spray him anytime he starts chewing something he shouldn't. Good luck!

We just got a 4 month old puppy that looks identical to yours. It's a girl & she is doing the same thing non stop biting and lunging. It's a journey daily but we have to wear her down daily with fetching and pull toys. We got her lots of chew bones & toys. It's helped significantly. I'm sure the previous owner sold her due to this very reason.

For biting, you need to use dog psychology. You need to convince him that hands (to start) are associated negatively. The sounds gross but is effective- and quick. The next time he bites your hand, don’t pull away. Instead, gently push further into his mouth (biting will stop at this point) and push on the back of his tongue to invoke his gag reflex. Tell him, “no biting. ” It may take several times, but your dog will not want to keep repeating this unpleasant experience and will stop. Again, be gentle while doing this. The point is not to punish but to have your dog associate a negative outcome with the behavior. Hope this is helpful.

I agree, this can be a very tough time when having a puppy. Our dogs also did this around this age. Redirecting is a great approach. Redirecting with Nylon bones, chew toys, Kong’s filled with treats are great ones. When the biting starts say “No Bite or Biting” and give one of these options and eventually it will click. Remind yourself your puppy is like a toddler and you have to guide them in the right direction.
by (1.4k points)
Also, be sure that everyone in your household upholds the same directions or it can be very confusing for your dog and will take longer to train. Praise, praise, praise when you’re getting the behavior you want.

Puppies are hard work! Make sure the puppy doesn’t view the biting as a game. Also, give puppy a lot of exercise and safe play time.

Most puppies grow up with their siblings and biting each other while playing is their thing. I’m not saying to bite them, but that’s just usually what they are use to. How they learn is receiving it back From a sibling a hard pinch back, on their ear a few times after they have bit you, and A stern no after, they’ll learn to connect the two. If they stop on a level you think they got it. Praise praise praise

He's teething. Completely normal. Try bitter apple spray for furniture and there are youtube videos on how to train him to not bite people.

Try to revert it to a toy instead of your hands. Those huskies have energy to be envious of! It will take a little bit of time but they’re smart! Good luck!

Totally normal. We taught our dog the command "off" as soon as he would try to chew on our hands. I would recommend @idaho at Lucky Dog Academy or Cloud K9 Academy. We didn't have the best luck at Narnia, but we also have a Border Collie and they need a more specialized form of training b/c they are so smart. You can also check out @wheresoever Garrett - she has a ton of online workshops/classes. Also a tired puppy is a less destructive puppy. Plenty of exercise and training to tire them out.

Oh, first training session was as simple as yes and no. Praise your pup with yes and then make the no unpleasant. Simple tug on the collar. Pups are used to mom dogs tugging on their neck.

Omg, we're going through the EXACT same thing. It's terrible. Especially to our 4 yo that doesn't understand how to re-direct our pup's attention. Its been 2 weeks, and she is *starting* to understand she isn't allowed to do that. I also read that if you remove them from playing with you. like a doggie time out, ( but never in their crate) they learn quicker, because all they want to do is play with you. Good Luck! It's HAAARRD.
