I almost yelled at some people having a grand old time with their friends on the trails yesterday. Do they not understand what is going on? Do they not care? No, they don't get it and they don't care (at least in my mind). People challenging and not abiding by the guidelines (our president included) are feeding flames of rage inside me. I'm at very low risk of getting seriously ill from coronavirus. But someone I love a lot is not at low risk. The person I was supposed to marry 2 weeks ago (but didn't bc coronavirus), the person I live with, this person who I love with my whole heart is tasked with caring for very sick people right now. As an anesthesiologist (experts in creating artificial airways) his skills have been requested in ICUs and on special "intubation teams" to provide the safest, most contained care to patients who are very sick. We know that health care providers inhaling the aerosolized coronavirus are getting sicker than people contracting it through droplet. Creating airways and being right in a patients face while you're doing it places you at high risk. I've listened in on the calls with his professional organization and the surgeon general. I'm acutely aware of the danger to anesthesiologists right now. We spend most days and nights (when we're not working or homeschooling our kids or cooking or cleaning) reading guidelines, reading updates, discussing what he should and shouldn't do right now. We talk until we fall asleep in bed about what to do. What are the ethics of helping when hospitals can't provide proper PPE? What are the ethics of not helping when you have skills that can save peoples lives? One minute I think "I don't care about other people, I want my husband to be safe". the next minute I think "If my son were sick in the hospital, I hope to God someone as skilled and caring as Freddy would be there to help him". After these long hours of debates, we go outside and see people congregating and having fun. We flip on the TV and see our president accusing medical staff of stealing supplies. Friends tell me they're traveling because 'oh well, I probably won't get sick'. All I want inside is for all of them to be restricted from having treatment once they get sick and need my husband's help. You don't get to be reckless and run around like none of this matters, but beg for the best help available when you or someone you care about is sick. Actually, that's not true. You do get to do that. And some of you are doing that. And you'll still be taken care of. And you might get my husband or someone like him very sick because of your choice. And I can do nothing about it except beg you to stay home. Follow CDC guidelines. Look out for yourselves and people you don't even know. Please. No play dates. No coffee. No visits with friends. No being cute about it. You are not supposed to socialize in person with anyone who doesn't live in your home. Walking with your friends and having coffee 6 feet apart does not count. If you're confused about what it means, here's a resource: If you're not confused about what it means, you just don't want to do it, please do it for me and/or Freddy and our kids. Help us sleep a bit easier and feel confident that people aren't placing him at unnecessary risk right now. Much love to everyone fighting this on the front lines. Let's take care of each other however we can ❤️

Your family's sacrifice is remarkable. I sincerely hope that the people who are still socializing and acting over confident will read this and reconsider their selfish actions. Stay safe and well.

You should look at the posts in - what’s happening in Naperville group. Someone posted knoch knolls was filled with cars yesterday and I asked a simple question : when will these parks and prairie lands close. I had three people telling me I was overreacting. I see the parks filled, ladies hanging out from the trunks of their cars, yesterday I saw two ladies in white eagle area talking with each other for an hour - they were 6 ft apart : we drove back just to check. More info is there that COVID-19 may be airborne. you can only do so much. Thank you to your Freddie and you - and sorry for the idiots around.

@clergy thanks for speaking up yesterday. I can’t take the ignorance & selfishness.

@joshia oh thank you for acknowledging.

@clergy I keep arguing, just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. The forest preserves & trails will be closing soon.
by (2.1k points)
@joshia I was thinking of making the closed for the season signs and putting up in the parks and other places: not sure if it is legal.

It’s because of the small percent of rule-breakers that privileges like state parks, the lakefront & the Arboretum are cut off from the rest of us. I’m starting to understand why China & other nations took such draconian measures to lock their citizens inside!

@protolanguage9 It’s really quite asinine, isn’t it?!

I personally know such a COVIDIOT. She lives with her mom, who has a couple of alternating caregivers. One of the caregivers lives with her son (separate bathrooms, thank heavens) & the son tested positive. So the COVIDIOT needs to quarantine for 2 weeks, in case the caregiver got it & spread it to her employer’s household. But the COVIDIOT thought it was still OK for her to run her daily errands & do grocery shopping! That’s the type of people we must guard ourselves against when WE go out shopping — and we need to assume that every place we go, we run the risk of inadvertently being exposed to the virus!

Well said! Some people don't realize or don't care about those people who are putting their lives on the line to care for others during this epidemic. It's ridiculous when our doctors are trying to think of ways to protect themselves because there isn't enough protection in the hospitals. I'm sure your fiance has a ridiculous decontamination process he goes through even before he steps inside your house.

First I would like to thank you hubby for having the fortitude to work through all this and save lives. With that said be careful how you judge others for their actions. We have been on lockdown for 3 weeks at my house. We are a family of 10. 7 children and 3 adults. I dont believe that it is an issue for small groups to take to the hiking trails as long as they are being safe and taking precautions. Only as long as they are staying away from everyone else and not going into places where they have to touch something. It is far more unsafe to make a trip to the store than take a walk/ride with kids to keep everyone's sanity.
by (680 points)
@tribade I completely agree! I'm talking about groups of 5-6 adult women walking together and groups of 7-10 teenagers hanging out on the paths. I certainly can't know who anyone lives with, but I doubt all of those people cohabitate. Families come in all shapes, sizes, and configurations ♥️ Also, may the force be with you sheltering with so many kids and personalities!
by (610 points)
@watkins yeah that sounds like a bunch of dumb asses that will be the reason this thing stays around so long.
by (680 points)
@tribade Exactly! That's my whole point. Families share germs and the coronavirus, but shouldn't be shared with anyone outside the home. I certainly hope you and your family can get out and enjoy the nice weather we're finally having!
by (610 points)
@watkins doing our best to keep our sanity. Since I am at high risk for this thing killing me and am considered an essential worker myself it definitely has me nervous.
