Hey moms!  Has anyone remodeled their kitchen?Hey moms! Has anyone remodeled their kitchen? If so, did you envision the design and then hire a contractor or did you hire a designer? Researching designs makes me feel stabby. I really feel I should hire someone else to do it.

I remodeled mine in my former home. We went the Ikea route I roughly planned it out, I knew exactly what I wanted, then hired the Ikea people to do the perfection of it and ensure we had every filler and odd piece properly accounted for and added into our purchase list. Ikea does a kitchen event 4x a year, so once every 3 months. If you do this a few weeks before the sale you'll have everything you need to go in and buy first thing. We had a local contractor grouo do the install (we assembled to save money). The best thing about the Ikea sale is that once you purchase the kitchen from them during the sale you can go back for the duration of the sale (a month) for anything additional you need and get it at your sale price (they sometimes do different %off based on the purchase amount. ) We got great looking kitchen exactly the way I wanted it for a crazy good deal.

@allen9684 Wayment. You assembled all of the cabinets? I’m having a panic attack just thinking about that.

@lenticel3615 it was 6 low, 3 tall and 3 wall, and we made almost everything drawers not doors. I get a very strange peace from Ikea assembly (but in this case my husband had to do it because I was nursing a newborn. )

We remodeled ourselves. We took measurements to the place we bought our cabinets from and they pulled up some designs after plugging in our dimensions and layout. They also made great suggestions which I wouldn't have thought of myself. Delivered to our front and my husband took care of it in a week's time. Tons of work as we had to demo old set up and haul garbage out. Can't say we'd do it again. however, we saved over $10K!

We worked with Chicago Builder Supply (the cabinet supplier) to design the kitchen first. Then they were able to refer us to some great GC's that have worked with their other clients. We had a very positive experience and having the design done before having the GC provide estimates made it very helpful.

@morgen thanks for the shout out. @lenticel3615, I’d be happy to chat with you about how to get started. People do it all different ways, with and without professional help at each stage. All depends on your objectives, budget, time and skill. I will say it can be helpful to get a designer in at the beginner to consult and give you direction. Sometimes fresh eyes give you options you might not have thought of otherwise. However you do it, it’s a big investment, take you time to get what you want. @acton7 Baumbach, interiors, gardens and fine art painting

We designed it first ourselves, then contracted an architect for details. Afterward we took our design to a cabinet designer. I reccomend making a list of things you really want (range, double oven, sink in an island, etc. ) Think about how you move around in your kitchen. I pinned a ton of ideas and then narrowed it down to a few choices.

Hired the designer who worked a lot with one contractor but we bid out with others. I asked the designer to just present 3-5 choices for me. It was seamless and we have been happy for the last 10 years. She took care of everything. Kitchen lab.
