So we haven’t lived in Illinois very long. so if someone could explain to me how drivers permits work here. I was trying to look it up online, but does the child have to be enrolled in a drivers ed class currently to get their permit? Were we moved from they needed drivers Ed before their official driver’s license, but didn’t need to be enrolled in drivers ed to get just the permit. My son turns 15 in July but will be a freshman. We were going to wait for drivers ed for sophomore year because that is when most of his classmates will be taking it. anyway. just trying to figure it all out. thanks

Cannot get permit until he is enrolled in drivers ed and completes a few classes. So he'd be unable to drive if you waited to do it in school sophomore year.

Also, he needs to have his permit for 9 months before he gets his license. So if he got his permit in Sept of sophomore year, he would not be able to get his license till June at the earliest.

My daughter turned 15 in September- we waited and did drivers ed privately and we started the program in early January. We liked the idea of not taking up school time for drivers ed classes; however we haven’t gotten and drives in with instructor due to the shelter in place. In order to get a permit they needs to have a few classes and they take a little quiz. After that, they take the certification to a drivers ed facility to get the permit

My daughter turns 15 this August. She just started at Drive home safe 2 weeks ago. She will be able to get her permit once the instruction portion of the class is done and she turns 15. The classes are being done by zoom.

After 4 hours of class instruction they can take their permit test. They must have their permit for a minimum of 9 months prior to getting their license. My daughter is 15 now and we did classes at Drive Home Safe in Oswego! It was great!
