I have a side hustle question (sorry for the long post): My husband and I are older (66 for him, 60 for me) and getting closer to thinking about some kind of retirement. He works a regular job as a computer programmer, but spent years with his own business where he designed and supported his own financial software for small distribution businesses (think QuickBooks with more personalization and options). I've been a longtime social worker, and have recently started my own business doing adoption home studies, along with a contract gig doing foster care home studies. I've always worked a regular job and this is the first time I've had my own business and set my own schedule and I LOVE it. It is also something I can continue working at as long as I'm willing to do some driving around the state, and I can work as much or as little as I like. Yesterday, we were brainstorming what we would like our future to look like in the work arena and we know that we don't want to stop work entirely - we live simply, we're not big travelers, and we enjoy hanging out with friends and family and at home - but my husband would like to get back the flexibility he had when he worked at his own business - and we'd like to do something together. So. we thought about trying to set up a small bookkeeping business, something to bring in some extra money and keep us busy, but not needed or wanted for full time. He has the decades of experience in computerized accounting software, and I'm a total numbers geek and like to help people make order out of chaos (social worker, remember? ). We think we might have a way to get started via the local horse community (our daughter is entrenched there, and a lot of those folks aren't always the best with money because it's hard not to buy more horse stuff! ). I guess I'm just looking for thoughts. Anyone else here with bookkeeping experience? Is this even a possibility? Any others with ideas? Welcoming all kind responses, even if you think the idea is not realistic. We're at the very beginning stages of discussion, and very open to redirection. Thanks!

I don’t have any suggestions but I think it is wonderful that you are proactive towards your future and doing it together.

I think its a great idea! I think the only issue will be keeping it part-time versus full-time --- but, you seem to have a good handle on this.

Thanks @concrescence! I guess it would be a matter of deciding as we go along how many clients to take on. It would be a good problem if we were getting that many clients that we had to make that decision, right?! I'm figuring that we start with research and some development - and some extra quickbooks training for me (I do all of our personal budgeting on paper, but it will probably work better for most businesses to be computerized), and then slowly get the word out. My husband is still full time and all my income (plus a chunk of his) is going to savings and then to pay off the mortgage, so anything we make to start just goes to get us with deeper savings and no mortgage when he decides to slow down or stop working. I appreciate your support!

Wish you the best! I would want you to manage us . just by your post. so, I'm sure that you will get a lot of positive responses! We have no mortgage, but credit card debt that we are working on. plus, we just started a new business (Small Engine Repair) in Texas. we are coming into spring - so, we expect to be very busy. setting up LLC, sales taxes (if applicable) are also items to be aware of. again, wish you the best, you seem to have a good plan!

@concrescence Wow - that is so kind! Out of curiosity, what would make you want to hire me? I need to capitalize on that quality!  Congrats on starting your own business! No mortgage is amazing. Once we got through the rest of our debt, the savings have really been coming and it's been fun to see it grow. Imagine how cool it will be when you are totally debt free?!?!
