A couple ideas that me and my husband found effective. First of all we gave each other x amount of cash and the rest of it goes in the bank. He only takes $5 for the week and I take 22. A lot of times 18 goes in my tank. have one Saturday a month that you can spend x amount and go out and accomplish something maybe it's decorating a certain room or you need a certain outfit. the other thing at your job would be to have them take more money out of your paycheck and have them put it in the 401K that way you will have a brighter future and you won't blow it on things that won't matter in the long run.

$5 a week is all your husband needs for spending money? Mine gets $150 a week and is always asking for more by mid-week!

@thorathoracic yes all these things are going to pass and you're not even to be happy about the things you buy only for a short time it's like that small high I get it but you're going to want to relax and rest and do some great things in the future

@adrieneadrienne yes he does he makes coffee at work and he brings his lunch. What else do you need when you work? What is $150 going for question that's 600 a month it's just food for thought to think about

@adrieneadrienne that $150 a week could pay for a nice family vacation. Something everyone can enjoy and have memories of. No fond memories of lunches consumed. My suggestion is Pack a lunch or eat off the dollar menu with a side of water.

Well thank you for the advice, but I do make my husband’s breakfast and lunch for him everyday. He has to pay for parking for work, typically $25-$30/day. I’m sure he also spends it on small treats and coffee a few days a week, I have no problem with that. We have plenty for our splurges and vacations, no way he could go through just $5/week. Different people have different expenses for work, maybe try not to assume he’s just blowing it on food and junk.

@adrieneadrienne I'm not assuming anything I was just explaining what my husband does to save money and that's the advice you were looking for

@pigling I wasn’t asking for advice. I just asked how her husbands only needs $5 a week. I think you are confusing me with the OP

Maybe do an automatic transfer from your checking to savings every week?

@coloquintida this was the easiest way for me to boost my savings. I do $200/week and it makes a big difference.

@coloquintida I have mine set this way prior to receiving the deposit into my account. It is split through my employer before direct deposit

I’ve heard it’s easier to save and spend when you have cash. I’m terrible at saving money, too. ‍♀️ But it’s harder to hand over cash than swipe a card.

Get an app like acorn. It helps save and invest those little bits here and there.

Increase 401k contribution. Also, look into Dave Ramsey. Financial freedom.

@etka22951 yes I agree on the 401k. I increase it every few months.

As soon as me or my husband get paid I do a transfer to our savings account. If I don’t do it right away I know that money gets spent elsewhere. most likely at Target

When I started saving money, I rented out a safety deposit box at my bank and was withdrawing cash from each my pay check ($100-200) and put it in the box. This money is not on your account, so consider it “spent”. That way saving adds up quickly. I really liked the process and enjoyed recounting my cash every time I went to the safety deposit box

@pentathlon55 at least if you do a savings account, whether it be the same bank as your checking or not, ~1% interest is better than none, and you still get access should you need it (safe deposit box the bank needs to be open)

Every time yo are buying something stop and ask yourself if you really need this item! Can you survive without it? Watch “Minimalist” documentary on Netflix

I opened up a savings account at a bank in a town 45 min away (I'll never drive there). I declined having a debit card for the acct. I transfer money into it every paycheck

Prioritize what’s IMPORTANT NEED vs WANT Wants need to be weighed out. Set goals for your money for future use

I’m the same way! I’ve started making a list of wants and when I get the money, I wait 1-2 weeks before allowing myself to buy it to make sure it’s what I really want. Give yourself time and even make a list of what else you could do with the money and see if your mind changes at all!

Auto deposit to savings! You set the amount or % and it's out of sight/out of mind.

15% of my paycheck goes into a savings account that I can only access by going into the bank.

I don’t buy it it. Buying something gives you a momentarily high and exhilarated feeling. But soon fades. Do you neeeeed it? Or just desire it. I needed new gym shoes. Was eyeing a pair. Waited till they went on sale and used a coupon. How often are you really going to wear that new necklace? Just say no.

Also don’t just go to stores to get out and see what you see. Need to get out. Go for a walk in nature.

Having an account at a different bank might help!

When me and my husband started tithing, we noticed that saving was definitely possible. So what we did was get a savings account with a different bank. (We don’t have a debit card or anything with this account) and every week we have an automatic transfer to the account and we never touch it. It’s like it’s not even there. Kinda like tithing. Every week you give money to the church and it’s like you never even had it to begin with. It’s helped us a lot. Also every week me and my husband decide how much money we can spend for “fun” so let’s say we decide on $100 I get $50 and he gets $50 we use it for whatever we want. Once it’s gone, that’s it and we have to wait till next week. This has also saved us a lot of money. Knowing your spending limit. And having restrictions but also not restricting yourself so much.

Hide it. Open an account with no debit card and you have to walk into bank to withdraw. I have two of those, one x amount is transferred in each payday.

I have money directly deposited into a credit union. I have no debt card or checkbook for this account. I physically have to into the building to get money which I’m too lazy to do.
