I moved to Tennessee from Chicago a few years ago. We love the zoo in Louisville and I’d say try and do a cave crawl at raccoon mountain and visit lookout mountain( both near ) with great views train rides an old war field and cafe all near each other. Like a one stop shop. Gatlinburg is my favorite. Take the kids to the carnival strip by margaritaville in pigeon forge it’s all walkable along river, rides and all.

Drive up into the mountains. There’s a small settlement that’s like a living history museum.

We used to leave/drive after midnight so we get there early in the morning. I don't recall anything cool along the way. There's things to see/do in Chattanooga but at that point you are about an hour away depending on where you are staying

Louisville has been our stop on the way to TN. They have a cool downtown and Louisville Slugger Museum.
