This is only tangentially related but has anyone had success with No Solicitors signs? They were fairly rare for my first year in this home, even during a heated local election, but lately I have a church knocking once a week. I don’t answer the door or acknowledge them via the Ring and I don’t love the idea of a sign on my door but wondering if putting one up for a couple week might get me off their route.

I moved into a house 3 years ago, and had endless witnesses coming by. Packs of women with strollers and tracts to give me. I didn't answer, so they came back. I started answering the door, telling them not interested, and when they tried to give me their brochures told them "ok, I'll put them in the recycling. " They grabbed their stuff back, and never showed up again. :)

@rayner Hey! What is a “tract”? Because the ladies today said “They have a ring doorbell so I will leave this tract since they’re watching” Which I was totally watching ‍♀️ but live I thought she said “I will leave this trash”

@johannejohannes5760 It's the little brochure things.
by (3.8k points)
@rayner And that’s what she pulled out of her purse. I never knew that term. I was thinking, don’t leave your trash

I put a small magnetic "no soliciting" sign on my mailbox that is pretty discreet. Some solicitors don't see it or ignore it, but I've seen some turn around because they spotted it. So it does work.

Mine works, but I also have a pit bull that greets them at the door too.

I have one. And by ignoring it you're giving me consent to tell you to get the hell out of my yard and question your intelligence all from the comfort of my couch. (Or 200 miles away from the passenger seat of my wife's car when we were driving back from vacation last year. ) I've also had a few people chuckle and take photos of it which always amuses me.

I think a lot if them are too young to know what a solicitor is.

I would just answer the door. Don't be disrespectful but be firm that you're not interested in what they're peddling. Most of them will not come back.

@minnick I have debilitating social anxiety. It can be hard to understand but you might as well be asking me to sing naked to a crowd as to speak with a stranger through a doorbell. I’d just as soon have them leave their paper each week.

@johannejohannes5760 maybe a note on your door. Would send them the message and you won't have to talk with anyone.

They better obey the sigh if they know what’s good for them

We use to get them all the time in our development that is out of town. We put a sign up and haven't had a single solicitor since.

Ignore everyone. it’s your choice not to answer. a sign might or might not help.

Mine works awesome with solicitors because in my town it would be illegal if they continued. Legally in my town nonprofits are not considered solicitors. It’s normally the Jehvoah Witness that come to the door. They are normally good about not coming if you ask to be put on the list.

@kayne I had a real problem with them until I had just brought the mail in and was sorting through it I offered them one. Stopped them for a couple of months!

And if they don’t pay attention, my 2 dobermans quickly correct that.

For us a sprinkler head at the front door that suddenly comes on has reduced soliciting. just saying.

We have a sign, they have a so called commitment. If you face them and tell them to leave they are obligated to not come back. Yes there is a list they keep to show where they have been and where they are not welcome. No, you are not ditching GOD, just their way of presenting their gospel to you. Just say no!

My sign never worked. Now they see my floodlight cams and the doorbell, they don't even bother to come up to the door lol.

I have one and I've watched people walk up to my door and turn around. So it works here.

Most people see mine, read it twice and leave. My city has an ordinance that says if you do not respect the sign, it is a crime and you are trespassing. If they persist, I hit the siren on my FLC.

I put one up in the neighborhood I used to live in and I actually saw people turn away without ringing the bell!

Answer the door 1 time in an outfit to fit the occasion and tell them they've pulled you away from your ritual sacrifice to the dark lord Word will get out and you're off the hook

In our community, political and religious groups are exempt from following “no solicitors” signs. The rest follow about 50% of the time. Had a guy from a window company explicitly tell a trainee to just ignore the sign, all captured on video.

@wellordered Last night I did check to see my cities rules and, basically there are not any. They identify door knockers into three groups. Peddlers, selling something for profit. Solicitors, who are fundraising. And Canvassers such as religious, political or special interest groups who are no requesting money in any way (just your soul) and as far as I can see the only rule surrounding any of it is that peddlers must register with the city and sign a paper “swearing” they’re not a convicted violet felon.

@johannejohannes5760 , How about the ones looking for nobody home so they can try to break in?
by (3.8k points)
@elate58 I think that’s covered under a different set of rules.

I don't care who calls. I don't go to the door unless I know the person and want to see the person.
by (3.8k points)
@aroid10  Obviously. But I’m hoping to get them to stop coming to the door all together.

You cannot restrict political or religious groups no matter what you do

Jehovah’s Witness here, we aren’t supposed to knock where they’re “No soliciting” signs. But if you don’t answer your door, we will mark you as “Not at home” and we’ll return the following weekend. If you don’t want us knocking, stop hiding and answer the door and say: “not interested, add me to the “do not knock” list. We’ll stop knocking till it’s time to do a census. It’s just that easy people.
by (6k points)
@graphophone It's just as easy NOT to knock. If a person wants something they GO to it. I don't go knocking on doors preaching my beliefs. Nor should other religions or cults come knocking at my door.
by (3.8k points)
@graphophone While I do appreciate that information about your practices, it’s actually not “just that easy” for people with anxiety disorders. Answering the door to a stranger sounds absolutely impossible to me. I cannot even imagine such an act. I will put up the No Canvassing, No Soliciting sign, and hope that the local church, Baptist in this case, moves along.

You not knocking is much easier.
