My slow internet is getting pounded by 2 ring stickup cameras. I would like to add more cameras but if I can’t reduce the Wi-Fi demand it won’t work. My Reolink cameras can reduce resolution, can the ring cameras do the same?

Just up your internet speed

@acuate  not with Windstream DSL of a whole 19Mbps.

@attrition damn who uses dsl anymore
by (1.2k points)
@acuate it’s called being rural and only a single ISP option. Windstream started to make improvements when another company started running fiber but they don’t come out my direction. Ironically fiber runs down the road in front of the farm but they Windstream says is a trunk line and they won’t tap me into it! Makes it a challenge some days.

Oh damn that sucks.

I know the feeling! We're stuck with CenturyLink DSL here in central NC because there is nothing else available. blazing upload speeds of 11mbs and download speeds are not even half that! It's awful!

19mbs and 11mbs!? I can't even run my alarm clock on that. Lol

No fast cell data in your area?

19 up is plenty for cameras. It’s not the speed it’s the bandwidth. I have 100 down and only 10 up and run 4 cameras flawlessly with a good WiFi routing system

You are probably using a modem/router combo from wind stream that is limiting your channels, and not allowing your cameras to upload properly. The speed is fine, upgrade your modem/router.

What is your current internet upload, download speed? What speed is your WiFi capable of achieving? Are your switches Gig Ethernet?
by (1.2k points)
@tonedeaf397 the best down which I have never seen (but is advertised) is 22Mbps and the best up speed is 2. 2Mbps.

@attrition ouch! Your upload is very low. Down is tolerable. I use to have 50 down, 5 up and was seeing major lag. I updated to 15 up and now I have no issues. My down is at 175 now too, but I think up is more important for security cam to feed up to the ring servers.

@tonedeaf397 my son keeps telling me that Tesla will have a solution within a year so we will see. I just purchased a new Orbi AX4200 WiFi 6 mesh system so I’m ready when it gets here. Reviews had it running over 300Mbps if I remember it right
by (5.6k points)
@attrition Orbi is a very cool system.
by (1.2k points)
@tonedeaf397 So far I’m liking the Orbi but they don’t have a second satellite that I can add for the AX4200 so the told me today that I could order the AX6000 because they are compatible. We will see.

You may be best with Reolink 4g LTE cameras

Change the zones, or the sensitivity.

Until recently I had DSL 40Mbps Down and 2 Mbps up. I had 8 cameras and surprisingly the lag was only 2-3 seconds however I did not link cameras did not want more than one at a time uploading. Ring had said that 1 Mbps was the minimum and 2 was recommended but what they should have said was that if you only have 2 up at best than all you will get is 720p and not 1080P. The 2 up jumps all over the place so rarely got the 2 when needed. They do state that if they are not able to sustain a reliable connection that they will decrease the quality. That is what the did with our connection.

With poor/slow internet, may need to move away from cloud based services and get a local NVR

Actually, Ring cams resolution are self setting depending on the bandwidth it receives.

Wi-Fi is a mysterio, there is not a single dart that can be thrown and say here is your problem. Signal: How many walls does it need to transmit through. What materials absorb/kill the signal. Do you have reflective or dissipative surfaces that kill the signal? Router How many devices are on the network? How far does the router typically transmit? do all of your devices play well with the signal transmission? Where is the router positioned? Have you considered Ethernet for non mobile devices? Carrier Are you overtaxing the current band with? . there is a whole lot of questions

Then I was thinking about isp’s throttling. The new ax system IMHO, has played some games with internet providers servers. once they catch up Wi-Fi may soon again drop.
