I haven’t done a proposal in close to 7 years. I don’t do them. In terms of contracts the customer clicks a checkbox when they checkout during payment in order to accept the terms. Simple.

Why wouldn’t hosting a presentation work for your clientele?
by (3.6k points)
@meretricious I too don’t use proposals in the way one normally does. For me it’s more of an agreement to something we’ve already discussed.

That sounds great but what if they mail you a check? Setup a form where they are directed to make an online payment or mail a check but have to check the "agree to terms"?

I dont accept cheques. Here in Australia, people havent sent cheques since 1976

@meretricious yeah same. I don't understand people who use checks. Direct bank transfer or stripe for me.

@calculous46211 who the hell uses checks?

@serpasil we have a white label client that mails us a cheque lol

@yorktown62056 must be a US thing?
by (10.9k points)
@serpasil shit, sorry!
by (3k points)
@meretricious in hospitality industry “nightclubs” its always cheques

@serpasil such an American/ Canadian thing. Being a dual citizen of America and Australia, I realised how archaic the banking system still is there, especially for being one of the finance capitols of the world. I haven't seen a check since last April when I last visited America. Lol.

Pfff customers have to click a checkbox!? My customers don't even get to decide if they have signed up, I just go straight in with a 12 month up front invoice and glare at them edgily
by (10.9k points)
@dowling that must be such a great experience for them

I hate proposals. I will still do them while grumbling to myself because some corporate clients want then like @serpasil said but I feel like they just ask for them because they feel like they're supposed to ask for them. They barely ever actually get fully read, even with a simplified version (my proposals are like 5 pages long at most, including keyword details).
by (10.9k points)
@dowling agree 100%. Most never get read, if they do get looked at, they just flick through to the last page and look at pricing, or they get deleted, printed out and stacked an inch high on someone’s desk. You don’t stand out because they’ve received 15 other proposals from other seos all using the same software (great example here in this post) or worse still, they get forwarded to someone in India for $3 an hour. “here’s all the recommendations, do this”. In addition to all this there’s no message, you can’t convey any value - especially if the client is just sitting there looking at a PDF. They’re time consuming and most business owners don’t even understand them. Or you spend hours putting one together and you don’t get the job (I’ve spoken with some freelancers that spend days doing them) For me, I do presentations and they kick ass. The advantages are massive. I did proposals for probably close to 10 years - I’ll never go back.

@meretricious I've gotten lucky and most prospects want a proposal as a formality before closing a sale. Usually I have beat out my competitors by that point, and the client wants a proposal as like an action plan, which is pretty pointless with SEO because they usually have already received an audit and recommendations from you with a strategy already presented. But if a prospect wanted a proposal as a sales tool, that is ridiculous. I prefer to do that in person because sales is way better done face to face than over a formality document IMO ‍♂️

Better proposals, not perfect by any means. I am able to make a pretty attractive proposal and host it on my domain. Also the signature system is pretty legally tight
