Marketing Talk We have the data. Does this mean a negative name association does matter for branding? Perhaps not all publicity is good publicity.

I think don’t think anyone wants to be “that guy” and dampen the mood of the party with Corona beer. Prolly all it is

@dimorph28475 - I fucking love Corona. Especially with lime. In the summer.

There is a local music venue here in Asheville called ISIS Music Hall. they named it right before ISIS got its name in the news. They got MANY MANY angry phone calls about the name, but nonetheless, they refused to change it.

In new conspiracy theory news, the virus was developed by Netflix to increase the views of their new Pandemic show with partnership with Heineken and sellers of masks to deposition Corona.

That’s a horrible lose-lose situation for them—they can’t joke about the virus to swing sales and they have to deal with ignorance. Perhaps a good marketer can figure something out—if they can show they are losing 9 figures then they might be given some leeway in advertising and marketing.

Corona must immediately spend $10, 000, 000 to spread the new name Covid 19—that’s their best option probably

My New Trading Strategy: 100% monitoring the CDC website for new outbreaks and then shorting any stocks on companies whose names closely resemble those new viruses. Winner, winner, chicken dinner.

They just need a good commercial that says this is the good Corona. Watch out for the bad one.

I'm almost certain that if they rebrand from "corona" to "Corona Vaccine" they will hit the jackpot.

I thought every publicity is good publicity

I think we'd be naive to assume that this is purely as a result of consumers who associate this product with the cause of the infection. Even to those who understand there is no connection, the word "Corona" will now always have a negative connotation and will subconsciously deter people from making it their beer of choice when standing at the bar.

This reminds me of when my friend bought a beauty salon that had a great reputation in the local area. A couple of years later a terrorist organisation with the same name became mainstream news. The sales for Isis Beauty dropped until they rebranded

If you read the various news articles, it's the general slump in demand for all their beer brands in China due to the virus, not just the Corona brand
by (1.2k points)
In the several articles I read, AB didn't blame the drop on negative brand association though , they cited the slump across all brands as a result of Chinese lockdown, especially over Chinese new year. Newspapers have just slitted in "maker of Corona suffers slump" etc as clickbait to make everyone think different. Seems to have worked. This is more an example of clickbait headlines than anything else.
by (5.6k points)
@fro5 nailed it. The article contains zero data how much corona was sold in the US after news of the virus spread. At least as far as the article is concerned we know nothing about how "Corona" is pronounced, spelled or spoken in the PRC, or how, if at all, people in Asia associate the beer with the virus. As journalism goes, it lacks any statistical context -- if one product drops in the Asian market we need to know what's going on in Asian markets before we can blame it on similarities in the English name of the product and the English name of the virus. This is a quintessential example of salting a story with a few data points to persuade an audience the data is speaking. No credible data scientist would recognize that scant data as instructive. It's simple "scientific proof" of the sort we stuff into copy about "research has shown a 500% increase. " without any concern for the actual merits of the research. In other words, as fellow journalists have called it, the job is to make meaningless pap seem interesting. That's all this is. Clickbait to sell readers to advertisers.

They should run a contest on what to rename Corona Beer. Would be worth hundreds of millions of dollars of free publicity. Plant teams of ppl in cities who picket to KEEP the name and talk abt how dumb it is to associate beer wiith a virus.

Why do u think they named it after the beer? to all u idiots who calls it a conspiracy, first tell me what Corona means. i know what it is, thta is the reason why they named it after the beer.
by (300 points)
Not to brand myself as an idiot (check the phrasing of your post), but it seems Corona means a white circle of light around something. Frankly, I have no idea how this connects to bear OR a disease. But I've been trying to ignore the whole thing altogether precisely because it is being hyped. Honest question: Why would they name their beer after that?
by (550 points)
@elenore Corona = crown. =iluminati. freemasons ritual. Bill gates already warned us. why would they name that virus after a beer? u shouldnt ignore it cus it has to do w everything going on in the world today.
by (150 points)
It wasn’t “named after the beer”: First described in detail in the 1960s, the coronavirus gets its name from a distinctive corona or 'crown' of sugary-proteins that projects from the envelope surrounding the particle.

by (810 points)
Corona means 'crown' (as per the one on the logo on the bottle) which is what the virus looks like under a microscope
