Is it possible to replace an old garage door opener receiver/controller with a modern board that is compatible with modern secure remotes and wifi? My 2006 craftsman opener's receiver is on the outs. I currently have a MyQ wifi controller that is the only way to consistently control it since it almost never responds to the regular RF remotes anymore. I wonder if there's such a thing as an easy retrofit upgrade that takes the old receiver out of the mix entirely.

Assuming your momentary switch (button on the wall) still works, you can make it wifi compatible for about $15. All you need is a 120V relay and a wifi socket. Basically, wire up your relay so that when activated, it completes the circuit (in parallel with the existing button) on the garage door opener. The way you trip the relay is by sending a "turn on" command to the wifi socket which is powering the relay. Because the garage door needs a momentary switch, you'd set a command in the wifi socket's app to immediately "turn off" the wifi socket 2 seconds after receiving the "turn on" command.

@unborn thanks. Interesting. Any specific product recommendations that are compatible with Google Home? Also, do you have any ideas about how to have reliable remotes for the car?

@pie969 no. Pretty much everything works with Google and Alexa these days. I open from my car with phone (via the Smart Life app).

Why not just buy a new opener?

$200 + installation is the reason I am not ready to buy a new garage door opener.

@ziegler10 I've installed plenty of them but I am no longer wanting to give up my time to projects like this.
