My husband has our chicken coop completely automated

Oh man, does he have a blog? I would love to read more about this.
by (980 points)
@lavinalavine we do, but the plans aren’t up on it yet. We’re trying to find an electrical engineer to work with to get plans for download

I would still read your blog if it was about yard birds. I only have 4, but just recently got my first eggs. I am still learning.

@barnaba555 could you add presence detection to that?

I'm quite happy with my lights coming on at dusk and off at a specific time.

Probably not super amazing really but using Alexa to turn on scenes that includes lighting, blinds, projector screen, AV components turning on and going to the correct settings and remote button presses that can take you all the way through smart menus

I have my fireplace setup now to use temperature and motion sensors to turn on when certain temperature thresholds are reached at certain times of the day to warm the downstairs before we get down there, to turn off automatically if it doesn't detect anyone in the house or if it hits another temperature threshold (and alert us when it does), and to balance large discrepancies in the upstairs and downstairs temps automatically at certain times of the day. It's basically fully automatic and we can still override by voice, remote, or app when needed.

@unexpected, what do you want know?
by (1.9k points)

Alexa announcing when the dryer cycle is finished Alexa reminding that the garage door has been left open Monitoring Wifi router temperature and adjusting the AC lower. Bathroom light turning on very dim at night when I get out of the bed. Then turning off when I get back in bed Arming all cameras and setting Alexa Guard mode when I arm the security system.

@apprehensible I use a SmartThings multi sensor for both. For the dryer, it is the vibration, for the garage it is open status of 10 minutes.
by (12.1k points)
@apprehensible Tilt sensor. When you pair it there is an option to select garage door. You need the sensor for MyQ to work correctly. Yes you can use the sensor in automation including WebCoRE
by (12.1k points)
No it is not the sensor that comes with MyQ. You need a separate sensor to report to SmartThings. I use the ST multi sensor. You can’t use the MyQ sensor for ST automation.
by (610 points)
@lixivium3 I have MyQ tied into SmartThings. No sensor needed.
by (12.1k points)
@goof3 Tell me about your WebCoRE pistons that use the garage door without a sensor.
by (610 points)
@lixivium3 it’s not WebCoRE. Let me see if I can find the procedure.

Bed presence system and lighting automations based on state. I have a smaller ranch house that's pretty open. Smart dimmers in the kitchen and dining room that are conditionally controlled by master bedroom presence. Both sides of the bed occupied between certain hours and all of the lights are turned off and motion sensors are disabled. One side of the bed active and lights go to a low brightness value on motion. Also when one side of the bed is occupied the bedroom fan on a smart plug is turned on.

When my Chihuahua goes out the dog door only at night, the pool light comes on so she doesn’t fall in again

My front door lock triggers my inside front entryway lights to automatically come on. And after 10 min, they automatically shut off. Used IFTTT and Smart Life App to program.
by (5.2k points)
Surely a normal PIR could have done that !

Programmed a caseta pico remote favorite button for goodnight. It shuts off all lights in the house, closes bedroom shades, sets alarm, locks exterior doors, locks the car, sets the temp for the night, and turns on the white noise machine. Via home assistant.
by (910 points)
Why do you have noise machine?
by (310 points)
This one is a dohm. We got used to them living in a noisy city before we moved to the suburbs

90% of the lighting inside and outside my home is zero touch and just works around us. Still feels like magic after many years
by (8.6k points)
@apprehensible Sure. Not easy to describe it all briefly but my smart home models all the rooms and zones and also occupancy and presence in them can be driven many different types of sensors. This is described on my website () For every light in my home I can associate a software 'controller' (https://smartisant. com/research/hcs/controller. php) which makes it dead easy to automate things. Each light can use an adaptive base schedule based on light levels, sunrise, sunset, etc, be triggered by occupancy in a room/zone, the time on can be 'extended' by any sensor in my home (over 300 of them). It is incredibly easy to set this up as the underlying complexity is hidden. It's so easy my wife can do it

We have safety lighting which is 12V and behind a 12V UPS. This provides very low level lighting around our home at night so we can move around without being dazzled by lights coming on automatically. I also have protected emergency lighting linked to the alarm system. These are red LEDs that light up the way to exits, etc. Things like the main rooms lights are occupancy driven and also scheduled. PIR sensors in our lounge extends the time this is on and so do door contact sensors. Even the 4K TV is a "sensor" that keeps the lights on and an infra-red sensor picks up remote controls being used too. In places I have connected furniture that act as occupancy sensors. External lighting is driven my motion sensors, beam break sensors, side gates, garage door, etc. These also act as security deterents. Light switches also work and are occupancy sensors too. Some more examples on my website:  With lighting, I can use any light fitting or fixture and prefer to use dumb lights and then make them smart. This is cheaper and gives me many more form factors and options to get stylish lighting.
