What would be your first 5-10 recommendations for smart home accessories that you deem most necessary from a convenience or even safety perspective? Curious what everyone would say based on what they already have experienced

Water sensor and water shut off. Alarm that listens for smoke:CO2 and alerts you by phone email and text if it hears something regardless of the state of alarm.

I just added a Moen Flo water shut off but can't yet comment on it

@impending9 It's only a partial solution. I recently had a dishwasher drain hose fail that the Moen would never have detected. Fortunately I have water sensors and a water shutoff valve that immediately shut off the water. With the Moen solution the dishwasher would have gone through it's entire cycle without ever knowing that the kitchen floor was being flooded by waste water.

@township agree. I use these guys here. Along with ifttt and smart valve shut off.

@packing my security alarm listens for any such sound. The fridge door is left open to fire alarm going off. So if you have that alarm in your home, security will listen for it.

@dandiprat Yep. I have 17 of those water sensors in my house. A cheap investment for peace of mind.

@timeous not a perfect solution because it relies on internet connection and ifttt. But that’s how I do it. If sensor detects were, then shut water off. I just didn’t like any of the products that did both without a connection through the internet. Or the cost of them.

@timeous Chinese made and showing unavailable right now. But there are others. Your shut off doesn’t have a handle, or you think it wouldn’t work?
by (4.4k points)
@timeous this one does not. If you have to hire a plumber to put in a new valve anyway, there are better solutions I think. Cutting out a valve and sweating in a new one should t be much. The service call will cost more than the labor most likely.

@impending9 smart light switches, cameras (indoor and out) door sensors, motion sensors, ST with webcore and Alexa Speaks, Alexa. With that I’ve automated most of my house.

@packing I have honeywell zigbee smoke sensors and teckin smart plugs (flashed to tasmota) on the washer, dryer and 3D printer so far.

@kylstra Agreed, but how do you solve switching when they are not in the proper line of sight? I see Philips offers a sensor for their light system ($$). Is there one that is more "universal" that talks to a wi-fi switch? I'm not interested in buying into a Philips lighting system. I have most things covered already.

@francium63 all of mine is done with home assistant . can control pretty much anything

You don't need a smoke alarm to do that you just need triggers. If my smoke alarm or home alarm go off every light in the house comes on. Both systems will send me and the monitoring center alerts immediately.

@ziegler10 the smoke alarm is the trigger in this case - so im not sure what you are on about?

@kylstra, You can always just add a few listeners instead of a smoke alarm. My smoke alarms are tied to my alarm system. I only replaced them because it was time. Hell even echos act as smoke alarm listeners / glass break sensors now.

Water sensors and water shutoff valve. Had I had those last September it would have prevented $75, 750 damage to my home.

Kind of backwards way of things. Figure out what bugs YOU most and find a solution then go onto the next thing. Odds are there is a solution for about anything you can think of though it might be out of budget.

Thermostat (#1 by a mile) Ring Alarm ($10/mo or $100/Yr) Fire alarm / CO / listener Smart lock (Schlage) Smart hub (HA, Hubitat, ST's) Alexa (cheap voice control) Light switches / bulbs Inside / outside cams Smart garage opener Water leak/Freeze sensor Water shutoff switch Rachio sprinkler control system All of that will put you in a good place. I probably forgot something but after that it's personal preference.
